Obituary

Mary Hope Petty, 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loving family in prayer. She was born in Beaumont, Texas to Mary Hope Fulbright Crow and Raymond D. Crow. Mary Hope was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Rufus Seward Petty (Petkovsek) and brothers, John William Crow and Francis Maxwell Crow. She graduated from Beaumont High School in 1937 and went on to receive an Associate of Arts degree from Lamar University School of Business in 1939. Mary Hope Petty, 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loving family in prayer. She was born in Beaumont, Texas to Mary Hope Fulbright Crow and Raymond D. Crow. Mary Hope was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Rufus Seward Petty (Petkovsek) and brothers, John William Crow and Francis Maxwell Crow.

She graduated from Beaumont High School in 1937 and went on to receive an Associate of Arts degree from Lamar University School of Business in 1939. After marrying Rufus on February 20, 1941, in Little Falls, Minnesota they moved to Sacramento, California where she was secretary to the Chemical Warfare Officer of the Army during World War II. After the war, they returned to Texas with their son, Bob, and Mary Hope served as secretary to several state representatives at the capitol in Austin. They then moved to Bellaire, Texas where they welcomed two daughters, Mary Carol and Janice. The family later moved to Houston where she worked along side her husband in his CPA firm.

Mary Hope was a 57-year member of The Daughters of the American Revolution in The Samuel Sorrell Chapter and The Lady Washington Chapter. She enjoyed being a member of Westbury United Methodist Garden Club. Mary Hope was a member of Bellaire United Methodist Church enjoying many outings and adventures with her friends in the Gibson Sunday School Class. She volunteered many hours in various organizations including The Methodist Hospital Auxiliary, PTA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Rotary Club, and others too numerous to mention.

Mary Hope is survived by her sister, Louise Crow Malik, as well as her three devoted children: son, William Robert Petty; daughters, Mary Carol Petty Lenz and husband Dr. Matthew Lawton Lenz and Janice Raye Petty Hill and her husband Michael Nelson Hill. She also leaves a beautiful legacy of 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren and a myriad of nieces, nephews, and dear friends. The grandchildren are: William Christopher Petty and wife, Lora Llenado Petty, Donald Andrew Petty, Emily Jo Petty Harrison and husband, Miles Harrison, Natalie Fay Petty Meador and husband, Timothy Meador, Lance Lee Gordon, Martha Hope Lenz, Ruth Merrill Lenz, John Matthew Lenz, Joseph Lawton Lenz, Paul Rufus Lenz, Mary Rose Lenz, Gabriel Eric Lenz, Robert Michael Hill and wife, Kaitlin Speer Hill, and PFC Thomas Nelson Hill. The great grandchildren are: Logan Meador, Emma Meador, Grace Harrison, and Zoe Harrison.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to both Crizzet McCullum and Sarah Leach for their unending love and acts of kindness towards Mary Hope and her family in her last years. These angels brought her such joy and happiness and for that we will be forever grateful.

Visitation with family and friends will be Thursday, August 21st from 5:00-8:00 PM and memorial services will be held on Friday, August 22nd at 10:00 AM both at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home with Reverend Jim Love officiating. Interment will immediately follow. Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Christopher Petty, Donald Petty, Robert Hill, John Lenz, Thomas Hill, Joseph Lenz, Paul Lenz, Gabriel Lenz, and honorary pallbearer will be Lee Gordon. For those desiring, memorial donations may be made to Bellaire United Methodist Church or The Daughters of the American Revolution.
