Mary Lou Alla, 85, of Sandwich, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2014.

She loved her family, her friends, her home, flowers, Cape Cod and the Patriots; her life and home reflected these commitments.
Since childhood, her summers had been spent in West Dennis and in 1978, with her family grown, Mary Lou and her husband Frank moved from Wayland to Sandwich. They never looked back.

While her focus was family, Mary Lou devoted her energy and talent to the floral design business she shared with Dolores Ahern, "Flowers by Dolores & Mary Lou" and to Cape Cod endeavors and organizations she felt important to support.

Mary Lou was a dedicated supporter of the arts. A former president of the Cape Cod Conservatory Guild, Mary Lou organized, designed and directed many fundraisers. These included Show Houses in a variety of Cape Cod locations, as well as the unique "Music, Art and Flowers" events. Her long friendship with Jamie Wolf, artist and founder of the Cotuit Center for the Arts, provided another venue for her creative ability. No detail was overlooked in her public presentations, whether in floral design, musical contributions, artist selections or designer choices. Her interpersonal skills allowed her to work well with her team to attain the goals of originality, beauty and artistry in all pursuits.

In addition to her floral design business, Mary Lou was a member of the Garden Club of Hyannis, a past president and its longest serving member. And, multiple times, she served as chairperson for the Barnstable County Fair flower show.

Mary Lou was a blue ribbon winner many times in varied categories of floral design. Her work always had a special beauty and grace. She was awarded an honorary membership to the Massachusetts Judge's Council in recognition of her contributions in every aspect of flower shows.

Mary Lou was also a charter member of the Southeastern District of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Design and Horticulture Study Group and her designs graced the Sandwich Glass Museum and the Hyannis Library.

She is survived by her children, Victoria Alla of Salem, Mass., Christine Johnson and her husband Eric of Marlborough, Mass., Michael Alla of Avon, Mass., Joanne Alla of Houston, Texas, and James Alla and his wife Joyce of Marblehead, Mass.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Margaret W. Sherman; nieces, nephews and so many friends.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Corpus Christi Church, 324 Quaker Meeting House Road, East Sandwich, MA 02537. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mary Lou's favorite charities: Rosie's Place, 889 Harrison Ave., Boston, MA 02118; or Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.

Arrangements under the direction of the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, Sandwich.
