Mary was a wonderful friend to me in my time at Toledo University back in the 1960's. i met her through our mutual friend Dan Thomas. She and her then husband, Enrique Fraute, were great friends to me. I know she is at peace.

I have only just learned of the death of my sweet friend from Toledo, Mary Sefferly. Mary and I were good friends in college and I re-visited her in Toledo after I'd married and had children; we lost touch shortly after she moved to Venezuela. I was persistent and found her again, several years ago. I managed to visit & reunite with her and meet her wonderful sons in early-November 2014; I so wish I had visited her again. She was perhaps the brightest and sweetest person I have ever known: a born teacher, and a true friend. Dorothy Singer Hirshfield (U. of T., 1965)

Mary was a wonderful human being. I had the honor of being her student in Caracas Venezuela. She was a great professor and a wonderful friend to me. Thanks to her I knew about an exchange program to come to the US. My condolences to the family.

I have to confess that I only met Mary once--at the 2013 conference on the works of William Faulkner at the University of Mississippi--but that single meeting was sufficient to make her a close and valued friend.
Our friendship says everything about who Mary was: an immensely generous, curious, energetic, supportive, and genuine person--a true teacher both by profession and by characterwho could reach out with supreme kindness and irrepressible fellowship, making a substantial and beneficial impact on somebody's life despite only meeting them once.
Although we had only a couple of brief conversations during the conference itself, and just happened to share an enjoyable lunch at the airport on the way home, Mary subsequently became a wonderful pen-pal, and we exchanged numerous e-mails about our experiences and our interests. But, in addition, Mary regularly sent me packages of books she thought I would enjoy, as well as magazine and newspaper clippings she hoped I would find illuminating or useful. She even posted a very kind and thoughtful review of my book on Amazon.com. Mary's tireless encouragement and interest meant so much to me.
I am sorry I never got to know Mary better, but I feel so blessed that I got to know her at all.

I became friends with Mary when we were freshmen at Woodward High School. I dearly loved her for her kindness to one and all, for her fun-loving nature, and for her serious approach to learning. Mary, Sondra, Joyce, Margaret, Barbara and Michelle-we were not part of the in crowd but we got along with all the different factions at school and so we were almost a part of all groups.
Then Mary and I went on to UT and had a fabulous crush on the same boy. I don't think either of us wanted to date him exactly, we just kind of worshipped him and thought he was wonderful. If a friendship can survive that, it is a strong friendship forever.
Here is my favorite Mary storyI have a brother who is two years younger. So he had a horrible decision to make because of his crush on the older womanIf I drove to school, he would sit and casually put his arm around Mary. But every 16 year old wants to driveso it was a daily struggle for him as we went to pick her up drive or put his arm around Mary.
Mary was a caring and lovely lady. She was loved by one and all.
Sincere sympathy to you all.

They say, "The key to immortality is living a life worth remembering," and you, Mary, will be remembered.
Those who knew you loved your sweet, compassionate, and gracious nature. Those taught by you recognized in you a rare dedication and determination to nurture and guide others, as they relied on your skills, wisdom, and ability to give them confidence to succeed. You were an advocate for all students, and you gave them respect for diversity and support for them as individuals. You left your mark through your patience and positivity.
I was blessed by your friendship, and inspired by you as a colleague. So many people will miss you, but you will always be alive in our hearts and minds. Rest in peace, Mary. God bless you, and may your journey forward be joyous!
