Mary Sue McCormick Hockman, 87, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Whitestone Masonic and Eastern Star Home.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church in Steele's Tavern, VA with Rev. Jeffrey Carr officiating.
Sue was born to the late Raymond and Margaret Virginia Moore McCormick of Fishersville, VA. She attended James Madison College with studies in education and continued her work as a teacher in Stuarts Draft. Mrs. Hockman worked for Augusta County Schools for 25 years as secretary to two principals of Stuarts Draft Elementary. She moved to Charlottesville and worked for eight years as an administrator to the Headmaster in the Lower School of St. Anne's Belfield. Every class at St. Anne's valued her guidance.
She grew up in the church of Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church, Fishersville, and was a life-long member of Finley Memorial Presbyterian Church in Stuarts Draft where she served on Women of the Church and Communion Committees. She was active in supporting SDHS Band Boosters. She designed and created Majorette and Cheerleader uniforms in support of her daughters and the school.
Sue Hockman was preceded in death by her husband Maynard Engle Hockman and sister Martha Forbes. She is survived by her daughters, Beverley Drell and husband Neal of San Marcos, CA, Sherry Sumerlin and husband Dan of Williamsburg, VA and Martha Theissen and husband Tim of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Jordan Thomas and Chase Thomas; sisters, Virginia Engleman and Ellen Beard; nephews, Terry Forbes and John Forbes and Flint Engleman; nieces, Gwen Carr and Ginny Pointer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Arthritis Foundation in memory of Sue Hockman and her mother, Margaret McCormick: Arthritis National Research Foundation, 5354 E. 2nd St., Suite 201Long Beach, CA.
