ADAMS, Mary "Rusty" (Phalen) of Norwood and Eastham, Massachusetts passed away with her family by her side on December 14, 2011 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.
Born on Valentine's Day in 1932 in Boston, Mary graduated from Roslindale High School, Class of 1949, and the Newton-Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. Following graduation, she worked as a nurse in obstetrics at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Though she eventually stopped working as a nurse to raise her children, she continued to maintain lifelong friendships with her fellow nurses.
Mary enjoyed over 50 memorable years on Cape Cod in Eastham with her husband and family. Cape Cod held a special place in her heart that was nurtured over the years through many sunsets at First Encounter Beach, visits to Nauset Light, hours at the Eastham Public Library and the annual July 4th Orleans Parade. Mary was a voracious reader and an extraordinarily thoughtful gift giver who will be missed by her friends and family, especially during the Christmas season. Mrs. Adams was a communicant her entire adult life at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Norwood and St. Joan of Arc in Orleans on Cape Cod. She enjoyed travelling with her husband and enjoyed many trips during her lifetime. Her trips to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, from where her parents hailed, ranked high on her list of places visited.
She was the beloved wife of Richard L. Adams for 55 years; loving mother of Richard L. Adams, Jr. and his wife Margaret of Walpole, Claire A. Ginder and her husband Kenneth of Cape Elizabeth, ME, James E. Adams and his wife Haley of Somerville, and Peter L. Adams and his wife Maria of Marblehead; devoted sister of Margaret Childs of Billerica and Leo Phalen of Norwood; loving grandmother of Julia and Kate Ginder of Cape Elizabeth, ME, Andrew and Patrick Adams and Sakura Hinenoya of Somerville, and Elliott and Henrik Adams of Marblehead. Mary is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, James H. and Agatha (Bates) Phalen.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 19 at 9:00am from the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole Street (Rte. 1A), NORWOOD, and at 10:00am at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 547 Washington Street, Norwood, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow the Mass in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Roxbury. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, December 18 from 5:00-9:00pm at the funeral home.
