1947 - 2012

Mary Angela Allen, 64, died suddenly at her home in Gray Georgia Tuesday, January 3rd. Born in Macon shortly before Christmas in 1947, she was the daughter of Angelo Punaro and Annina Benedetto Punaro. Angie, as she was affectionately known, enjoyed a lively childhood in the grand historic family home on Orange Terrace.

She attended St. Joseph's School and Mt. De Sales Academy, where she was a cheerleader, and acted in theatre productions, and Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, graduating in 1969 with a BFA degree. At a young age, she proved to be an exemplary mother to her son Bert, and enjoyed an active life with her first husband Ab Roesel. Later she served as a Weight Watchers instructor, reflecting her desire to help others that can be traced to a childhood interest in the local hospital "candy striper" program. An accomplished artist, Angie enjoyed painting murals as well as holiday cards, writing poetry and dance.

Angie pursued a lifelong interest in art, kept close friends that she had known since her school days, and welcomed new friends with her kind and sharing personality throughout life. Angie wanted the world to be as beautiful as she envisioned it in her art. She saw in others the kindness that was the core of her own personality. She loved to teach art, and to share her vision as well as many of her actual paintings, generously giving them to friends and family members, in whose homes they have become cherished possessions.

While Angie surrounded herself with her friends, and her own beautiful artworks, she also waged a lifelong courageous fight with a chronic and debilitating illness, yet never
allowed it to eradicate her innate spirit of kindness, generosity, or love. She was a loving and nurturing mother, a loving daughter, and a cherished family member who shared many occasions both happy and sad with warmth, a sense of humor, and a steadfast loyalty. To this day, visitors to her home will observe numerous photos of her sister and brothers and their children., along with those of her own. In the early 1990's, Angie found her soul mate in her husband, Dean Allen, who mirrored her love of friends and family, until his untimely death in 1994.

She was predeceased by her husband Malcolm Dean Allen, of Macon, by her parents, and by her brothers Anthony and Frank Punaro of Macon.

She is survived by her son Albert J. (Bert) Roesel and wife, Susanna Cluthe Roesel , and granddaughter Aurelia Reed Roesel of Marietta; by her sister Trudie Punaro Thomas and Husband Kit Thomas of Arlington VA, brothers Major General Arnold Punaro and wife Jan Punaro of McClean VA, Vincent Punaro and wife Dr Lynn Punaro of Dallas TX, Michael Punaro and wife Elena Punaro of Richmond, VA., nine nieces and nephews, and an extended family of cousins, Aunts & Uncles, and dear friends.

Angie leaves us with a legacy of love of life, the beauty of art, the value of cherished friendships, and a steadfast belief in the strength of family. We will miss her always,
But our lives are enriched and empowered, and will forever by buoyed by the example of her irrepressible spirit, and expressions of beauty, peace, and love.
