Mary Ann Bacon, 72, of Jacksonville, Florida, died at 1:55 am on Thursday May 5, 2011. Mary Ann was born on October 2, 1938 in Lackawanna, New York. She earned her R.N. degree in 1972 and spent 38 years practicing nursing in New York, California, and Florida. She resided in Jacksonville for the past 16 years.
Mary Ann started her career as an R.N. and worked in various capacities within the nursing field. She especially enjoyed working in the Intensive Care Unit as a young nurse. She became a Head Nurse and then moved up into several Nursing Supervisor positions. Later on in her career, Mary Ann worked as a visiting nurse in the home health area, a hospice nurse, and a patient care coordinator. Her career ended at Children's Medical Services when she finally had to retire in January. She had a very strong work ethic and always wanted things to be done the right way…
Mary Ann was of the Catholic faith. She was a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Family Catholic Church and previously at Prince of Peace Church. She truly loved the Lord Jesus and wanted to serve him well. She spent her life helping other people and giving of herself to her family and to others in need.
Mary Ann's greatest joys in life were her three children - Suzy, Mary, and Cathy, along with her three grandchildren – Kendall, Alex, and David. She loved cooking for others, taking care of the sick, watching movies, and was an avid reader. She also loved talking on the phone as anyone who knew her can attest to! She will be remembered for her kind, giving spirit and, most of all, for her never-ending devotion and love towards fulfilling the needs in other people's lives. She will be greatly missed and her love is permanently sown into the hearts of those whose paths she crossed.
She is survived by her three daughters – Suzanne Bacon, Mary Hunter, and Cathy Carrier, her two sons-in-law – David Carrier and Bill Hunter, and her three grandchildren – Kendall Carrier, Alex Carrier, and David Hunter. She is also survived by her brothers Patrick McCann of Oceanside, California, and Gary McCann of Buffalo (Lackawanna), New York, as well as by her sister-in-law Mary McCann, her nephews Andy, Brian, and Craig McCann, all of whom are also from Buffalo, and various nieces and nephews around the country.
A memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, May 11, at 5:00 pm at Prince of Peace Catholic Church followed by a catered reception in the church conference center. Prince of Peace is located at 6320 Bennett Road in Jacksonville.
Cremation will be handled by Greenlawn Funeral Home where a private service will be held at a later date.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, The Hadlow Center, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32257.

I worked with Mary Ann both at Community Hospice, where she was my supervisor, and at Haven Hospice. She was a kind and caring nurse and a wonderful friend. She was always fun to be around as a work mate. She was also honest and fair as my boss. The patient's welfare came first with Mary Ann. She spoke so proudly of her daughters and my sincere sympathy goes out to her family. God bless you, Mary Ann.

Expressing sympathy is always difficult, all I can say is how sorry I am. May God hold you all in his arms and heal and comfort you with his love. Your Mom's memory will always live in our hearts

Mary Ann McCann Bacon's blood mingles with mine in the DNAs of two grandchildren. It's their good fortune that the class they inherited from her overcame my less praiseworthy influences.

To Mary Ann's family and friends...I will dearly miss your mother at CMS. I might have been the Director, but I learned from her every single day. Her sharp wit and her experiences and stories were something we regularly shared. I know she is breathing without difficulty now, worshipping with all her heart. Thank you for sharing her with us.

During Mary's last weeks of life, I had the unique pleasure of being her physical therapist. We shared many thoughts and stories during those beautiful moments. She was indeed a pleasure to know and a blessing to of had that brief time together.

I am so sorry for the loss of your Mother, although I only met her a few times, she had to be a wonderful lady because of the three wonderful daughters she had. I wish you comfort during this time knowing she is free of her illness now. Losing a Mother is very difficult. My thoughts and prayers are with you all and the rest of the family during this difficult time.

Mary Ann, God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you and whispered "come to me." With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. (Irish Prayer) We shall always remember you and will miss you. Kate and Fred
