Mary Baer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 29, 2011.

Mary Rosina "Roses" Baer
(nee Lazar) passed away peacefully on Friday, October 28, at the age of 86, surrounded by her family. Roses was born to William and Aileen Lazar (nee Buckley) in Appleton, WI. Her father called her Roses from the day she was born and that name remained with her throughout her life.

Roses graduated from St. Robert Grade School, Shorewood High School, and Milwaukee State Teacher's College. It was there she met the love of her life, Joe Baer. They were married on June 19, 1948. After teaching in Waukesha for one year, she and Joe moved to Baraboo where they had their first three children. After moving to South Milwaukee, having three more children, and raising her family, Roses returned to UWM to earn an M.A. in Reading. She first taught in the South Milwaukee School District and then at Milwaukee Area Technical College for ten years before retiring.

Roses and Joe traveled extensively -- domestically in their beloved RV and internationally at every opportunity. They took more than 45 international trips , including China, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and their favorite destination, Ireland.

Roses never met a person that she did not love, hug, and engage in conversation. She was a writer and loved to sketch vacation spots. She published a book of her sketches and life experiences called My Scriptographs.

Roses is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Joe; daughters Mary (John Kramp) Baer and Kathy (Rick) Monroe; sons Bill (Nancy) Baer, Dr.Tom (Bobbi) Baer, and Mike (Sue) Baer; and ten much-loved grandchildren; Nick, Marcus and Lucas Monroe; Michael, Andrew, Christina, Jon, Sophie, Ian and Megan Baer. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Betsy and her siblings, Anne, Aileen (Sis) and William.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the caring staff of Village Square at Alexian Village and the wonderful aides from Comfort Keepers - Ella, Jennifer, Karna and Linda - for their love and support of Roses.

Please join the family for a celebration of Roses' life to be held in the Chapel at Alexian Village, 9301 N 76th St., Milwaukee 53223 on Tuesday, November 1. The family will receive guests from 1 to 2, with a mass at 2.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Joseph and Roses Baer Scholarship Fund c/o Lawrence University, P O Box 599, Appleton, WI 54912-0599 or to the charity of your choice.

To the Baer Family,
It is so true that Roses never met a person she didn't hug or love. I feel fortunate to have received many of her hugs and send mine to all of you at this very sad time. But what a life she lived with great adventures all over the world and a giant footprint from those who loved her. Special hugs to Joe, the love of her life.
Love from the Matthews and Cunningham families

I have never thought of family as only blood, and Grandma Roses surely is one of the main reasons for that. Through her love, warmth, caring and beatiful comforting smiles and looks she has always made me feel like a grandson to her, and I feel privileged for that.
I loved and respected her the same way I did my blood grandaparents, and I will miss her just as I miss my blood grandmother. She has always been a reference to me, and nothing will be able to erase all the good memories I have of her and the family.
All my love to her, and love, thoughts and prayers to all the family.

Roses Baer, my Mom, looked so beautiful that warm summer day in South Milwaukee, when I arrived as an AFS student,at the age of 16. She was lightened by her smile. What a smile!

Mrs. Baer, the teacher and writer, became my Mom and taught me much about love and kindness! We had such an alchemic encounter that meeting her has impacted on the way I grew up my sons and on the best choices I´ve made in life. I will always be her daughter as much as I belong to my original biological beloved Brazilian family. She also taught how to write, how try to look elegant even when the faces of life are ugly or sad. And helped me become a forgiving person, always allowing happiness into my life. She became my mother in a transcendental way.

Roses deep love for Dad,Joe Baer, her trust in him, her warmth and care, fed by Dad´s enormous generosity, certainly made the Baers the beautiful people they are.

The sound of Mom saying “I love you”, echoing in our hearts, will always make us better people.
Bravo, beautiful Mom Roses!

"Aunt Roses"
What a fitting name for the one who 'brought fresh flowers into the room" with her beautiful spirit, warm heart, and bright smiles. I am grateful to have known her and honored to share her formal name.
