Mary Rose Brief, 87, of Elk Rapids, passed away on March 16, 2014. She was born in Detroit to Fred and Maude (Yenish) Hill on March 1, 1927.

Mary was united in marriage to Thomas R. Brief in Traverse City on April 12, 1947. Together they raised two sons in Elk Rapids where Mary grew up. Mary worked at Munson Medical Center in the Radiology Department as a receptionist and retired in 1976 after 19 years of dedicated service. She was a life member of the DAV Auxiliary and former member of the Traverse City VFW Post 2780 Ladies Auxiliary. She loved reading, gardening flowers, dancing, singing and exercising with her beloved dog, Lacey. In her younger years, she and her husband Tom enjoyed flying model airplanes at an air strip in Kalkaska with other members of the flying club. Mary had a sweet tooth that could only be soothed by excessive amounts of sweets with chocolate being her favorite, but of course, anything with sugar would do. Mary was a very brave and independent grand lady that will be greatly missed by all of us that knew her.

Mary is survived by the "daughter she never had" Amy (Mike) Beehler, Step-grandson Dale (Theresa) Bruckner, Brother-in-law Jack (Betty) Brief, Sister-in-law Agnes Brief, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Thomas, sons James and Frederick Brief, siblings Lorrine Hill, Frederick Hill, and brother in law Gil Brief.

Mary's family would like to thank Christina Wellinger and the girls at Michael's, Sandy Valentine, and the many friends for taking such wonderful care of her these past few years. A very special thank you to Kim Nelson (Bowsers by the Bay) for taking in and taking care of Lacey when Mary was not able, to Mary Ellen Sarasin from Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church for bringing her weekly communion, and to the countless others who assisted Mary in her times of need. God Bless you all.

Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated on Monday, March 24 at 11am, with visitation one hour prior, at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Elk Rapids. Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski will preside and a luncheon will follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bowsers by the Bay in Elk Rapids or the Cherryland Humane Society in Traverse City. Please share your fond memories and condolences at www.CovellElkRapids.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home of Elk Rapids.

"Mary and Tom were friends of the family and we visited back and forth for many years. They were wonderful people and very hard working. Mary struggled to..." Sheron Mortensen (Kewadin, MI)
