Mary grew-up in the Pilot Land area of New Orleans and attended St. Leo the Great School and St. Joseph Academy. She was a devoted Catholic who was a parishioner at Our Lady Star of the Sea and later St. Angela Merici Church. During World War II Mary joined the workforce. At first she worked at a neighborhood shrimp canning plant and then at the old Dickies Potato Chip factory on Elysian Fields Avenue. Eventually she was employed by the Orleans Parish School Board where she would make life-long friends. After taking more than twenty years off from work to raise her children, she worked at both the Maison Blanche and D.H. Holmes department stores on Canal Street.
Mary was very talented. She excelled at crochet and embroidery creating many beautiful and cherished things for family and friends. Her hand work was truly beautiful. She could elevate gift wrapping to the level of art with the elaborate bows that she created. Mary was an excellent cook who prided herself on providing delicious meals for her family on a daily basis. Her Italian fig cookies were the absolute best. She was very devoted to her family and worked tirelessly taking care of her husband, children and grandchildren.
Mary was a member of the American Legion Post 203, Gentilly Links Women's Auxiliary and the St. Christopher Ladies Rosary Guild. As a member of the Rosary Guild, Mary produced hundreds of hand knotted cord Rosaries that were distributed to the troops in the Middle East. She was generous to a fault with both her time and her talent.
Mary was a very social person and enjoyed being around family and friends. She enjoyed parties, conversation and kidding with people. She particularly liked watching movies. John Wayne was her undisputed favorite actor, and she also enjoyed Bob Hope, Jack Benny and Gracie Allen. In later years, she enjoyed going to the casinos and was often lucky.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
