Obituary

Mary Shep Burton, age 81, of Houston, Texas passed away January 27, 2013 at 6:31pm. Funeral service will be held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church Gethsemane Campus, 6856 Bellaire Blvd, Houston, TX 77074 on February 1, 2013 at 2:00pm with Reverend Justin Coleman. Burial will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery, 21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, TX 77598. Mary Shep Burton was born to Robert & Bernice Brinkley Hammons in Daytona Beach, Florida on September 13, 1931, at Halifax Hospital in Volusia County. Mary Shep Burton was born to Robert & Bernice Brinkley Hammons in Daytona Beach, Florida on September 13, 1931, at Halifax Hospital in Volusia County. She was a graduate of Fairfax Hall and attended Hollins College and Atlantic Christian College. When she retired from NASA/JSC she worked as the Chief of Office Services Section at NASA/JSC. She was one of the first 35 people hired before NASA was created to start the U.S. space program. She was very active at St. Luke's Methodist Church where she helped establish new programs and was instrumental in increasing membership. She belonged to a book club, loved to play bridge and was the floor Captain and Treasurer at Clarewood House.
Mary Shep is survived by her 5 children, Robert C. Burton; Rebecca S. Starke; Lloyd H. Burton; Channing L. Burton; Ann E. Kenney, 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to "Clarewood House – Resident Assistance" and in the memo please write "In Memory of Mary Shep Burton".
