Memorial Services will be Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Gadsden, for Dr. Nell Griffin, 82, of Gadsden, who passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2013. Rev. Larry Fuhrman and Rev. Mat Alexander will officiate. Burial will be at Forrest Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing.
Ms. Griffin was a retired university professor (English) with a Ph. D. from Vanderbilt University. After getting two degrees from the University of Alabama, she taught at Auburn for 5 years. She lived in three southern states and also taught at the University of Alabama Gadsden Center; Murray State University (KY) six years; the University of Tennessee (Nashville branch) 1 year; and Jacksonville State University (21years). Nell enjoyed traveling, going to plays, concerts, art exhibits, and eating at swanky restaurants. She co-taught a Sunday school class at the First Baptist Church of Gadsden.
Ms. Griffin was preceded in death by her parents Ben B. Griffin and Mary Sewell Griffin.
She is survived by her cousins: Helen Magee, Robin Harbin, Mary Jo Gramling Cleveland, Ginger Sewel Pitts, and Mary Jane Whorton; and special friend Delores Brothers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Rejoice Sunday School Class, Gadsden High School Class of 1948, Curtis Burttram, Johnny Burttram, and residents and staff of Regency Point.
Special thanks to SICU stall at St, Vincent's Birmingham, and Dr. Larry Jackson, of Birmingham.
The family will receive friends in the Church parlor following the service.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the 1st Baptist Church of Gadsden.
