She leaves her three children Catherine Hoover-Castañeda of Houston, Texas, Thomas Owen Hoover of Wellesley, Massachusetts, and Nanci Hoover-Zimmerman of Austin, Texas. Mary earned a B.A. degree in Education from Montclair State College, New Jersey, and an M.S. degree in Mathematics from Purdue University. She taught mathematics for nearly thirty years at various universities but retired from the University of Houston-Downtown Mathematics Department in 1991. Before moving to Houston in 1975, the Hoovers lived in State College, Pennsylvania, then in Needham, Massachusetts for twenty years. From 1989 to 2001 they enjoyed summers at a home on Cape Cod. Mary was very active in sports from a young age, taking immense pleasure from sharing ice-skating, tennis, golf, skiing, and fast walking with her family.
Mary thought herself particularly privileged to have lived and learned so much during an era of amazing progress in science, technology and philosophy, and most notably during the spread of admiration for the philosophy of Objectivism, which she fully embraced.
