She is survived by her sister, Virginia Grimes, her two children Mary Kimberly Hamner and John Michael Horner, and their spouses, Brian Kelly Hamner and Carol Leigh Neel, her four grandchildren, Brooks Keegan Hamner, Morgan Kassi Hamner, William Coleman Horner and Ellen Chaney (Nell) Horner, two step-grandchildren, Margaret Raleigh Trissel and Clare Nevin Trissel, and her long-time companion, Charlie Fisher. Her husband, John William Horner, predeceased her in death by 35 years. Mary Nell's life began in the crushing poverty of the Great Depression, but she overcame those difficulties to become a much-loved mother and successful business woman. She married in 1953 and raised two children with her husband. She also traveled with him throughout the United States and to Europe as an Air Force wife during the 1950s and 60s. In the 1960s, Mary Nell and John returned to Memphis and she started her own real estate company. After John's death, she retired and devoted much of her time to her grandchildren and her pastimes. Mary Nell loved music and dancing, and for a time was a regular at the Cotton Carnival festivities, sometime performing with the Carnival's bands. She lived a long and full life. Her family will miss most of all her humor, her caring, and her practical wisdom. A service in celebration of her life will be held at Memphis Funeral Home at 5599 Poplar Ave on Saturday, February 18 at 5 p.m. following visitation from 3 to 5 p.m. Burial will be held on Sunday, February 19 at 2:30 at Dyer County Memorial Gardens on Hwy 211 in Dyersburg.
