Mary Lavezzi Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 10, 2014.

Mary Anne Lavezzi passed away April 9, 2014 at the age of 100 in Auburn. Mary was born in Oakland, CA to James and Luisa Giacomini. She graduated from Oakland Technical High School, went on to business college where she learned bookkeeping, and spent many years working at F.W. Woolworth Co. Mary met Fulvio Lavezzi in the early 1930's and they were married in 1937. A son, David was born in 1940. The family moved to Walnut Creek in 1950, preferring to live in the country rather than the city. Mary & Fulvio sold that home in 1976 and found a new home built under the shade of a huge oak tree in Auburn, where they chose to spend their retirement years. Fulvio passed away in 1980, and Mary spent the rest of her years quietly enjoying the country life. She is survived by her son David, grandchildren Gabriel and Mia, and great-grandson Halen. I knew her as my Aunt Mamie, as she was one of my Grandmothers relatives, not sure if she was a cousin or niece of hers. I received many letters from her in the past few years talking about ancestry and other relatives. I cherished those communications from her as she felt like a kindred spirit. I did not know she had passed, but I had a feeling several months ago that she did; David, I am sorry for the loss of your mother as she was so special to me.

I met Mary 26 years ago when I was eight years old. I had just moved down the street from her and the neighbor kids and I would make forts directly across from her home. She would occasionally poke her head out her front door and tell us to be careful or to keep off the flowers. I spent about a year being afraid of her (I know it's difficult to imagine someone being afraid of such a sweet lady!). Than one spring day I decided to pick her some flowers, but because I was still to afraid to talk to her I placed the bouquet of flowers on her doorstep, rang the bell and ran. That was the extent of our relationship for about another year or so. I and my siblings would pick flowers for her, bring her a treat, or make her a little something, ring the bell and run.

Then one day I was caught redhanded! Mary had been wondering which children in the neighborhood had been leaving her the surprises and when she opened her door just as I and my siblings were about to ring her doorbell she found out. From that encounter we discovered just how nice and sweet Mary really was. Now that we were no longer afraid of her we began to talk each time we would bring her a little present. Often she would invite us in and we would be treated to stories of her life or hear the latest she had watched on the news and be told how bad our world was getting. When I was in high school we moved to another part of town, however I continued to stop by her home on occasion. When I left for college I would often stop by to talk to Mary on trips home.

I recall one fond memory of Mary giving me encouragement after a breakup with my boyfriend and her sweet conviction that everything would turn out for the best. I remember how excited I was to return a short time later to tell her the amazing "coincidences" that led to us getting back together and engaged! Over the last few years as her health has been getting worse and worse she wasn't always able to visit when I knocked on her door. I feel so blesses that on my last trip to Auburn in January of this year, she was having a good day and able to meet my husband and our latest addition of twin boys. It warmed my heart to see the babies reaching for her and giving her kisses.

What a blessing she has been to my life. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be her neighbor and friend.

I began working as Mary's handyman in 1988 and began a relationship that lasted until I left the state in 2006. We were able to maintain contact with Mary through phone and mail and annual return visits to Auburn. We considered Mary to be a close friend and we Will miss her.

Life is full of wonderful opportunities and surprises. I met Mary eight years ago when she was a spry 92 year old. Over these past years our relationship grew and took many paths. Through conversations, photos and stories we spent many hours together getting to know each other and about our family's histories. We even found a minor connect through the Giacomini family tree. Mary slowly became like an adopted Mother to me.

Possono voi essere con Unito con la vostra famiglia ancora. Ti amo !!!

I feel fortunate to have met Mary and spend some great time with her. A day never went by that she didn't tell me she wishes happiness for me. She made me laugh and she said some things that touched my heart. My dog, Dewey, loved going to see her and would get so excited when we got close to her house. He loved just laying or sitting with her. I'll never forget her or the time I spent with her. Thank you Mary for being my friend.

Mary and I shared so many memories and we both enjoyed hunting our ancestors through genealogy. Mary's grandmother was a sister to my great-grandfather, Frank Boitano. A few years ago she found her grandmother's parents, their names and where they were from in Italy.
She was so happy. Now she is happy and at rest. Thank you Mary, I will never forget you. Frank and Diane McBain
