June 14, 1931 - Mar. 10, 2013 ARLINGTON, VA - Mary Clare McCabe, 81, died peacefully on Sunday, March 10, in Arlington, VA, of complications related to Alzheimer's disease. A wake and hospitality visitation will be held on Friday, March 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road, South Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Bishop Denis J. Madden of Baltimore on Saturday, March 16, at 2 p.m. at the Church of Our Lady of Loretto at Saint Mary's campus. Immediately following the liturgy, a gravesite interment will take place at Cedar Grove Cemetery at the University of Notre Dame....

ARLINGTON, VA - Mary Clare McCabe, 81, died peacefully on Sunday, March 10, in Arlington, VA, of complications related to Alzheimer's disease. A wake and hospitality visitation will be held on Friday, March 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road, South Bend. Immediately following the liturgy, a gravesite interment will take place at Cedar Grove Cemetery at the University of Notre Dame. Mary Clare was born on June 14, 1931, in Pittston, PA. She was the daughter of the late William and Claire (Allan) Loftus. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Bernadette Albus and Kay Pursel; and her daughter, Margaret McCabe Kristl. A lifelong learner, Mary Clare was a graduate of St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston and the College Misericordia in Dallas, PA. She received a Master's of Library Science from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., in 1954, and a Master's of Counseling Psychology from the University of Notre Dame in 1973. Mary Clare joined in the sacrament of marriage with Sheridan Patrick McCabe on August 16, 1958, in Washington, D.C. They resided in Portland, OR from 1958 until 1967 and in South Bend until 2011. Mary Clare is known for her hallmark of hospitality and caring for others. She enjoyed a diverse and fulfilling professional life, distinguished by her love of learning, service and ministry. Following her degree at Catholic University, she worked as a librarian for the Georgetown School of Nursing, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Naval School of Intelligence. She served as a librarian in Washington, D.C., Portland, OR, and South Bend. After pursuing a counseling degree, she worked in Student Affairs at the University of Notre Dame with faculty, staff and students. She also received a Certificate of Homiletics from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, MO. Mary Clare's ministerial work included development of small faith sharing groups for the South Bend-Fort Wayne Diocese. Her faith and spirituality graced her work and relationships. She was a longtime member of Little Flower Parish in South Bend and an active participant in the life and luster of the Catholic faith tradition. A lover of music, in addition to her beautiful singing voice, she was an accomplished musician playing both organ and piano. She appreciated fine art and enjoyed being a docent for the Snite Museum. She is survived by her husband and her daughters, Elizabeth McCabe, Catherine (David) McCabe Grossman, RoseAnne (Gary) McCabe Halperin and Patricia (Miguel) McCabe Estrada. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Madelyn, Isaac, Hannah, Joseph and Margaret Clare (Megan); her brother, John Allan Loftus; and several nieces and nephews.
