Thanks for this memory book! I am Stephen Winniford Klyce, first cousin to Mary Alice and last remaining (of the immediate family) of the Michigan Klyce's. My father was W. Henry Klyce of Nashville, same name as the Rev. W H Klyce, our collective grandfather, also of my older brother "Bill" Klyce, and not to omit any, the very same as cousin William H. Klyce, Mary Alice's brother, of Tampa, recently deceased 6 months ago.
I was fortunate enough to have contact with most all of Mary Alice's siblings, especially bro. Bill of Tampa, her beloved sister Shelby and Shelby's daughter Peggy, "June" (Battle H. "Jr."), and even Aunt Marian Klyce of Nashville. That is spanning about about 68 years, beginning with several boyhood trips with Dad to Nashville when most of the clan were hale and hearty.
I particularly remember Mary Alice along with sister Shelby from around 1945-6 when many of our southern Klyce's resided in Nashville. The two young ladies visited Aunt Frances' and Dr. Fort Bridges country home on Stratford Dr., Nashville, and I a young adolescent just in 7th grade and bro. Bill in 8th, were invited by these beautiful cousins to go somewhere dancing! That scared me to death and I demurred; not sure about brother. Of course these ladies were 6-8 years older than we were, and much more socially astute.
The other clear memory of Mary Alice was her crystal clear, almost like a printer's font, handwriting which she sent our Jackson Mich. Klyce home every Christmas, sometimes in between. She continued that with me after my nuclear family was all gone in late 2000. The last such missive was about 2005 and I still have it. I did visit her along W. End Ave. and at Richland Place, the last being about 2006 along with Margaret Jenkins, my best lady. Margaret speaks very highly about her then and also in the past few days, as one Southern belle about another.
I did call her occasionally in Nashville from whereever I was and really enjoyed our delightful conversations. She chose not to come to our several Klyce reunions; however, we had one about 2000 or so in Tenn. and several "Klyce's" visited her at the retiree's residence in Nashville, which all enjoyed so much.
As all have said, she was always cheery, gracious, responsive, and interested in my life and work, as well as that of my brother and sister, Julie. When our mother, Julie, d. in 1988, Nov. 4, I spoke with Mary Alice and she tolled the "for whom the bell tolls" bell; she proclaimed: "and now, WE are the OLDER generation!" Mother, indeed at 90 1/2 was the last Klyce to go of all the immediate Nashville Klyce's. And so it was and is.
I became well acquainted with her neice Peggy Marshall during Tampa Bill's last declining weeks as she bore the brunt of all the needed care and arrangements for him, her Uncle.
Finally, I recall our special time and fine meal together in one of Nashville's finest in about 1997 when I went to the AIG home office in Nashville for training in my life insurance work. She, husband Gordon, and I had a delightful time together.
I will miss her and think of her often with her charming, lilting, "southern" speech, so much a lady, and extend my thoughts and condolences to the three sons, Peggy, Richard of Oregon, and all the myriad of fellow church folk and personal friends of hers and Gordon, Sr's. The Lord will most certainly to have such a devoted and loving Christian in His heavenly realm.
Stephen W. Klyce, July 10, S. Delaware.
