GrandMary, my step grandmother, loved the Lawrence Welk Show. I have so many vivid memories of her from the time I was quite young. Today, she left us to be with GrandBilly, her husband, in heaven.

My mom and I were discussing yesterday that this could possibly be our last holiday with her. I was looking forward to going to the nursing home with my family tomorrow and seeing her. And now... I won't be able to. I can only imagine what tomorrow will be like for our family.

It seems like no matter how hard you try, you can never truly prepare for death. You can know it's nearing and still find yourself in shock when it happens. I wasn't prepared to lose her, just like I haven't been prepared to lose any of the people I've lost in my life.

I find a little comfort in the fact that Seth is getting to spend Thanksgiving and all future holidays with another family member that loved him. He's actually buried with his favorite stuffed alligator (that toy could always make him giggle) and she gave it to him. Now, they can play with his alligator in heaven together.

I can remember when I was little I always hated when GrandMary made meatloaf (which is weird because I love it now). She would always make me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to eat instead. I can remember sitting in their front yard when storms were coming and counting from the time lightning struck to the time thunder roared to see just how far away the storms were. And, most of all, I remember how she accepted Shannon and I as her grandchildren even though we weren't connected to her by blood. She loved us just like we were her blood grandchildren.

She was an amazing woman and she will be missed greatly. I know she's in a better place than any of us and that we will all be reunited one day. I love you, GrandMary. Please watch over those of us that need it.
