Obituary

Mary Kingston Yonaskas, 89, of Old Saybrook and formerly of Oxford passed away peacefully on August 12th in New Haven. She was born in Ansonia on June 22, 1925, a daughter of the late James Kingston and Anna "Nan" McDermott Kingston. She was the widow of Stanley Yonaskas, whom she married in November 1969. Mary graduated from Saint Raphael Nursing School and worked as a nurse for the Connecticut Visiting Nurses and Southbury Training School until her retirement. She also earned a B.S. N. from Southern Connecticut State College and a diploma in Psychiatric nursing from the state of Connecticut. She was very proud of her profession as a...
Mary Kingston Yonaskas, 89, of Old Saybrook and formerly of Oxford passed away peacefully on August 12th in New Haven.
She was born in Ansonia on June 22, 1925, a daughter of the late James Kingston and Anna "Nan" McDermott Kingston. She was the widow of Stanley Yonaskas, whom she married in November 1969. Mary graduated from Saint Raphael Nursing School and worked as a nurse for the Connecticut Visiting Nurses and Southbury Training School until her retirement. She also earned a B.S. N. from Southern Connecticut State College and a diploma in Psychiatric nursing from the state of Connecticut. She was very proud of her profession as a nurse.

Mary loved square dancing and was a member of the Cheshire Cats. She also enjoyed bird watching (especially cardinals and blue jays), animals and vegetable gardening. She lived her life true and faithful to her Catholic upbringing.

Besides her husband Stanley she was predeceased by her six brothers and sisters James II, Kenneth, Joseph, Paul, Alfred and Helen. She is survived by many loving nephews and nieces including Dede whom she lived with her last year in Old Saybrook where she enjoyed many happy times with friends and neighbors.

Calling hours will be from 9:30am to 10:30am at Swan Funeral Home, in Old Saybrook on 1224 Boston Post Rd. on Monday. A mass of Christian Burial burial will follow and be celebrated at St. John's in Old Saybrook at 11am. A graveside service will be Tuesday at 1pm at the St Peter's Cemetery in Derby, CT.

In lieu of flowers, kind donations may be made to The Estuary Council of Seniors, Old Saybrook, where Mary was a member and where she enjoyed many lunches with kind-hearted fellow senior citizens.
