MASON ROMAINE, III, MD, age 90, of Jacksonville, Florida, died on February 25, 2013. He was born on December 31, 1922 in Petersburg, Virginia. He was the son of Elizabeth Patteson and Charles Nichols Romaine. He entered college at age 16 and received his B.A. from Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia in 1942. He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1945. Dr. Romaine pursued post graduate medical education in New York City where he was an intern and resident at Bellevue and Memorial Hospitals. He completed a Fellowship in Cardiology at New York Post Graduate Medical School & University Hospital in 1950. Dr. Romaine moved to Jacksonville in 1950 as a pioneer in the field of cardiology. He served his profession in many ways: President of the Florida Heart Association, member and officer of the American Medical Association, member of the American Heart Association, member of the Duval County Medical Association and member of the Southern Medical Association. Over the years, Dr. Romaine served as Chief of Cardiology at Duval Medical Center, St. Luke's Hospital, Baptist Memorial Hospital and St. Vincent's Hospital. He also served as Medical Director of Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. for many years. Most importantly,
Dr. Romaine served as a compassionate and dedicated caregiver to his patients for more than 40 years.
Dr. Romaine was an Ensign in the US Navy Reserves while in medical school from 1943-1945. He was called back into active duty during the Korean War from 1956-1957. He was a Naval Commander in the Medical Corps stationed at NAS Jacksonville. Simultaneously, he maintained his private medical practice. Dr. Romaine was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and served as a member of the Vestry. He was also a founding member of Jacksonville Episcopal High School.
Over the years, Dr. Romaine enjoyed memberships in Timuquana Country Club, The Florida Yacht Club, The River Club, Ponte Vedra Club and the Tarratine Club of Dark Harbor (Islesboro, ME).
Dr. Romaine is survived by his wife of 68 years, Anne Parker Romaine; three children: Mason Romaine IV (Jeannie) of Jacksonville, FL, Randolph P. Romaine of Columbia, SC, and Douglas P. Romaine (Elizabeth) of Lexington, KY; six grandchildren: Kollen, Mason V, Janie, Anne Mason, Doug and Charlotte; and two great grandchildren: Nolan and Virginia Mason; and several nieces and a nephew.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Vincent's Hospital, St. Catherine Labouré Manor and Community Hospice of Northeast Florida---The Dr. Gaston J. Acosta-Rua Center for Caring. Special thanks to Linda, Sherri, Pam and Jerry for their loving care.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Thursday, February 28th at 2:00 pm. Interment will be at a later date at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution is suggested to Community Hospice Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257 or to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 4129 Oxford Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32210.
