Dr. Matthew A. Medick East Lansing Age 87, passed away on January 31, 2014. Matthew was born on January 20, 1927 in Brooklyn, Kings, N.Y., to Jack G. and Amelia J. (Vuksanovich) Medick, the middle child of five children. Matthew graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in January 1945 with top honors. While in high school Matthew played football and ran track, being elected captain of the track team his junior and senior years. Age 87, passed away on January 31, 2014. Matthew was born on January 20, 1927 in Brooklyn, Kings, N.Y., to Jack G. and Amelia J. (Vuksanovich) Medick, the middle child of five children. Matthew graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in January 1945 with top honors. While in high school Matthew played football and ran track, being elected captain of the track team his junior and senior years. Matthew joined the United States Navy in 1945 and served his country until 1961 earning the rank of a LTJG, USNR. Matthew was honorably discharged in 1961. Matthew started his undergraduate studies in 1945 at Bates College, completing his undergraduate B.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1948 at the University of Illinois. Between 1948-1950 Matthew worked as a Graduate Fellow, Mathematics, University of Maryland and as an Aeronautical Engineer, Naval Ordnance Laboratory, White Oak, Maryland. Matthew was also working on his Masters Degree during this time and completed his Masters degree in Mathematics at the New York University, Courant Institute in 1950. From 1950-1951 Matthew was a lecturer in Mathematics at Pace College, New York, NY. From 1951-1953 Matthew was employed by IBM Corporation in New York as an Applied Science Representative. From 1953-1955 Matthew worked as a Lecturer in Mathematics, City College of New York, New York, NY. In 1955 Matthew became a Research Associate, Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, at Columbia University, New York, NY. It was at this time that he also began his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at Columbia. Matthew continued to work his way through his Ph.D. studies by working as a Lecturer in Mathematics at Northeastern University, Boston Mass from 1957-1958 and as a Senior Staff Specialist, Research and Advanced Development Division, AVCO Corporation, Wilmington, Mass from 1957-1962. Matthew earned his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Columbia University in 1958. In 1962 Matthew Medick came to Michigan State University where he became a full Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Matthew worked at Michigan State University until he retired in 1999. During Matthew's career he was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Engineering Science, American Mathematical Society, Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Matthew was the author of several publications on Wave Propagation and Vibrations and also served as a consultant for the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, University of California, Livermore California. Matthew's scholastic specialties were Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Vibrations and Shock Waves, Theory of Waves and Vibration and Engineering Science. In his free time Matthew loved to mentor Honor students and share his passion for learning, playing tennis, and lifting weights. Matthew also loved his Spartans and spent many Saturdays in the Michigan State Football stadium. Matthew also loved MSU Spartan basketball and rarely missed a game. Matthew loved to spend time with his family and his presence at the family functions will be sorely missed. Matthew is preceded in death by his parents, Jack G. and Amelia J. Medick, brother Jack N. Medick; sister Mildred Medick. Matthew is survived by his two sisters Martha Medick (Brooklyn, NY), Jeanette Eicher (Houston, TX); five children, Jean (Douglas) Carlton; Cynthia (Jayme) Smith; Julia Medick; Matthew (Kristine) Medick Jr.; John Medick; grandchildren Jaclyn (Dustin) Austin (Cynthia), Casey Smith (Cynthia), Nicole Smith (Cynthia), Peyton Rose Smith (Cynthia); Courtney Medick (Matthew), Michael Medick (Matthew); great-grandchild Molly Marie Austin (Jaclyn); niece Dr. Susan Eicher (Houston, TX); nephew Jeffery (Wendy) Eicher (Dallas, TX); great niece Amanda Eicher (Jeffery). A private family memorial will be held in his honor.
