Maureen L. Gilbert, 85, of East Hartford, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on May 11, 2017. Maureen was born July 22, 1931 in Montreal, Canada, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (McKeown) Laroche. She was the beloved wife of the late Hercule J. Gilbert.
Maureen was a loving and dedicated wife to Hercule, whom she was married to for 57 years. They made their home & raised their family in East Hartford. She was a caring and supportive mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Maureen worked at Wiremold of West Hartford for many years. She was a wonderful seamstress who also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She loved music and her time singing with the Sweet Adelines. Many summers were spent at the cottage on the lake where she enjoyed nature, and spending time with her family and friends. She will be remembered for her kind and generous spirit, and as a wonderful cook who opened her home and hosted Thanksgiving Dinner for over 60 years for the entire family. This tradition will be dearly missed.
After the death of her beloved husband, she embraced St. Christopher's parish where she found solace and friendship.
Maureen will be dearly missed by her family: daughters; Sandra G. Inkpen of Manchester, Linda G. Camarco and her husband Gene of Coventry, Diane Stebbins and her husband James of East Hartford, son Peter Gilbert and his wife Ann of FL., grandchildren: Adam Newton, Ryan Gilbert, Joshua and Geoffrey Stebbins, Great Grandchildren: Ethan and Evan Newton, sisters Evelyn Gilbert and Madelyn DuBois and her partner "Willie" Ouellette, many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
In addition to her husband Hercule, Maureen is predeceased by her grandson Ross Gilbert, brother Arthur Laroche and son-in-law Wallace Inkpen.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Maureen's memory to St. Christopher's Parish, 538 Brewer St., East Hartford CT 06118.
Friends and family are invited to attend a period of visitation on Tuesday, May 16th from 4-7pm at Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford CT 06108.
