Maurice Bailey, 80, of Lake Jackson, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2010. Maurice was born on October 14, 1929 in Smith County, Texas to Roland McTier Bailey and Norma Webb. Maurice Bailey served assiduously as a volunteer at the Sea Center Texas (SCT) in Lake Jackson, for some 14 years. His involvement with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) coastal fish hatchery, aquarium and education center began before the facility was built – becoming one of SCT's first volunteers. Maurice Bailey, 80, of Lake Jackson, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2010. Maurice was born on October 14, 1929 in Smith County, Texas to Roland McTier Bailey and Norma Webb.
Maurice Bailey served assiduously as a volunteer at the Sea Center Texas (SCT) in Lake Jackson, for some 14 years. His involvement with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) coastal fish hatchery, aquarium and education center began before the facility was built – becoming one of SCT's first volunteers.
A man with a deep conviction for volunteer service, Maurice dedicated over 3,044 hours to the facility. During this time he worked in many different capacities in the program. He recruited volunteers, provided tours to thousands of visitors and schoolchildren, assisted with educational programs, manned the touch tank, worked as a greeter and served as a member of the Volunteer Advisory Board for a number of years. He was a soft-spoken, kind and generous and his smile and presence will be missed every Friday.
Maurice is preceded in death by his parents, Roland McTier Bailey and Norma Webb; sister, Barbara Ruth Dunaway; brothers, Kenneth Morgan Bailey and Joe Richard Bailey.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Josephine and Curtis Jarrell of Austin; Sons, Jim Bob Holloway of Dyersburg, Tennessee, Roland M. Bailey of Clute, and William S. "Bill" Bailey of Richwood; grandchildren Albert Brautigam, Laura Jarrell Blackwell, Travis Jarrell, Gloria Holloway Winners, and Robert Holloway; 11 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and loving friends Lee Roy and Bonnie Jurries, and the mother of his children, Nora Helen Bailey.
His honorary pallbearers will be Lee Roy Jurries, Gary Jurries, Jimmy Jurries, Terry Tiller, Albert Brautigam, and Travis Jarrell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, at Restwood Funeral Home.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home, with Alan Trafford officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Sea Center Texas, 300 Medical Drive, Lake Jackson, TX 77566.
