Maurice Lewis "Bud" Campbell
"No man ever stands so straight as when he stoops to help a boy."
~Knights of Pythagoras
Maurice Lewis "Bud" Campbell, 78, passed away Jul 30, 2015 in Murray, Utah due to complications from cancer.
Born Aug 24, 1936 to Maurice James and Sarah Dorothy Christensen Campbell in Grass Valley, CA. He married Karen Martin on Aug 8, 1962. He later married Loa Mecham Schelin on Jan 12, 1994.
In 1960, Bud graduated with a degree in education from Brigham Young University. In 1998, he retired after 38 years as an educator in Murray School District where he coached football, basketball, and baseball. He was proud that his teams brought home numerous trophies including District and State Championships. He also influenced Utah High School athletics through his work with the Utah Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (UIAAA). In December 2015, he will be inducted into the National Athletic Director's Hall of Fame, the highest honor achieved in the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). Through his service on UIAAA and NIAAA committees, he also formed lifelong friendships with wonderful colleagues.
Bud was also involved in civic activities, including the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), where he served as a scoutmaster for over 30 years. He loved the opportunity to work with young men to help them become great men. During his years as a scoutmaster, he assisted numerous young men, and their mothers, to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. One of his fondest memories was a court of honor during which twelve of his scouts received their Eagle Scout Awards. In 1997, 1981, and 1985, he led troops from the Great Salt Lake Council to National Scout Jamborees. In 1986, he served as commissioner for troops from the Great Salt Lake Council attending the World Jamboree in Alberta, Canada. His dedication and service to the BSA was recognized with the Silver Beaver Award.
In his spare time, Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, and traveling with family and friends.
No fishing trip was complete without Ding Dongs, Twizzlers, soda pop, and a good fishing story. He spent many hours in his little red boat creating lasting memories.
Bud was preceded in death by his angel wife, Loa, and by his parents. He is survived by his children Jim (Judith) Campbell, Kay (Kent) Ellett, Tom (Kim) Campbell; 18 grandchildren; and by his sister, Margaret Jones. He is also survived by his loving and faithful dogs, Mollie and Nellie.
The family would like to thank the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Cascades at Riverwalk Rehabilitation Center, and Canyon Hospice for the kind and loving care provided to our father.
Services will be held Saturday, Aug 8, 2015, 1 pm, Little Cottonwood 16th Ward, 6350 S. Rodeo Lane, Murray, UT where friends and family may call two hours prior to services. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

I worked with Bud for all of my 36 years at MHS. He was one of my closest friends and I already miss him. We coached football together, taught Drivers Ed. together and shared the good times at good old MHS. We always had what I thought was a special relationship. Kent Smith

Playing ball for Bud he use to say "Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway."
We can not share this sorrow if we haven't grieved a while. Nor can we feel another's joy until we've learned to smile.

In 1986 our son Jason was 10 years old and terminally ill with cancer. One day Bud showed up at our home to see Jason and asked if he was into scouting. Jason said "Oh yes". Before long, Jason started getting letters and packages from Boy Scouts around the World with patches, banners, letters, photos, etc. Bud had gone home and wrote to Scouting friends he had made around the world and asked them to help our son out. They did BIG TIME. Jason was so excited with each package that arrived. Bud became such a good friend to our family that he spoke at Jason's funeral a few months later. Bud was the BEST. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Richard and Renee Beckstead, Sandy, UT

This guy was one of the people who taught me to drive, I also had him as a PE teacher. A few years after graduating I saw him stocking the lures at sportsman's warehouse. I didn't say anything to him because I'm only ONE student of probably tens of thousands. A minute or two later, as I stood there looking through the Panther Martins I here him say "you look like a Murray student", we then had a good little chat. It made an impression on me that he would remember me, even though I wasn't any kind of football or basketball star. The world is a better place because of him and people like him. RIP Mr. Campbell.

Mr. Campbell was my PE Coach and drivers ed instructor way back in 1990-91. They were some of my most memorable classes from high school. A guy who can teach with a sense of humor is a rare thing and Mr. Campbell made us all feel like we were his friends, without letting us slide on any classwork.

Mr. Campbell was my sophomore pe coach. He didn't take no crap and he worked us hard. I loved every minute of it. One of many memories was him having us lay on our backs side by side in a row and make us do leg lifts while he walked across our abdomens. We couldn't help laughing from the grunts coming down the line. RIP Bud!

Sad to hear about his passing. I will always remember his kind smile when I was having a terrible day. High school could be rough but with Mr Campbell around it was not as terrible. Also how he was with Jim and Judith's kids in Murray. We lived across the street and what a joy to see him as an adoring grandfather. May your precious memories sustain you till you meet again. Families are forever.

Known to a lot of us at MHS, "Uncle Bud" was someone who cared about the students. Although he was one to make us "toe the line", we all knew he had that soft side to him.
I actually came in contact with him when I was in grade school. He was coaching the MHS Baseball team over at Ken Price Ballpark. I had taken a spill on my bicycle and had a large cut above my eye. Bud took me to the dugout, cleaned me up, butterfly band aids, and got me to my grandparents to receive 12 stitches.
Five to six years later, I am walking down the hall as a Sophomore at MHS, and I hear, "Hey Hawkes"!! wondering what I did to have him yell, "hows that eye treating you"? All those years later he remembered what had happened, which continued a great relationship through the rest of my years at MHS.
To the Family, I am sorry for your loss,I can only imagine what kind of Father, Husband, Grandfather he was to ALL of you, because he was a great "Uncle Bud" to us at MHS.
RIP
