Maurice Camyre Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 17, 2013.

MAURICE CAMYRÉ

With great sadness, we announce the peaceful death of Maurice Camyré, our dearly loved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle on Tuesday, January 15th, 2013 at River Park Gardens Personal Care Home at the age of 97 years.

Maurice is survived by daughters Donna Langdon (Bruce), Carol Mitchell, Joan Wendt (Darrel); grandsons David Langdon (Laura), Jon Mitchell; granddaughters Jayna Mitchell, Alison Langdon (Matt Bryant), Sherry Wendt (Patrick Grosse), Laura McDermid (Michael), Laura Langdon (Brandon Gruidl ), and great-grandchildren Oscar and Sofie Langdon-Streeter and Maxwell Langdon. He is also survived by his sister, Doris Harrow.

Maurice married the love of his life, Mary (Polly) Stewart on June 1st, 1940. He began his 34 year career at Air Canada as an aircraft technician in 1941. Their love of dancing and playing cards filled many Saturday evenings with Air Canada friends and family members. Dad and Mom especially enjoyed traveling to Alberta and California to visit grandchildren.
Maurice lost his beloved wife Polly, on Nov. 5th, 2007. He was predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Agnes Rose Camyré, and his brothers Max, Charlie, and Joe.

Maurice was born in St. Vital on March 10th 1915. Raised and educated in St. Vital, Dad started his boxing career at the Eclipse Club. Great thrills of his career included winning the Golden Gloves Award and the Dominion Welter Weight Championship in 1935. The highlight of his career was representing Canada in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Following the Olympics he turned professional but retired from boxing in 1937 due to an elbow injury. He was inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in Toronto on Oct. 28th, 1977.

Dad was a kind, gentle and caring man, a hero to his family. A man of great faith, he was a Member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Bernadette Parish, serving as an usher at mass. As a Knight, he helped build the St. Amant Centre. He devoted many hours in service to others, whether helping family, friends or those in need. He will be deeply missed and his memory treasured.

The family would like to thank Dr. Gilles Pinette and staff of River Park Gardens Personal Care Home for their superb and compassionate care. We are grateful to Dad's sister, Doris Harrow and Jake Houtop for their loving support.

A celebration of Maurice's life will take place on Sat. Jan. 26th at 2:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy. #1 East at Navin Road. A private family interment will take place.

If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society, 120 Donald St, Winnipeg, Mb. R3C 4G2

I was a neighbour of Maurice in the 1930's when he lived on Rose Ave. in St. Vital I saw him exhibition box at the Eagles Athletic Club on St. Mary's Rd, at Tennyson, and also outdoors in 1932 at the St. Vital Ag. fair when it was at 1150 St. Mary's Rd. When Max Schmeling won the world's hvywt. crown,. Maurice won a bet that got him a ride in wheelbarrow from the Eclipse Club on St. Anne's Rd all the way to the Eagles Club on St. Mary's The wheelbarrow pusher had a sign on his back which said "Max Schmeling -- 'nuff said". Maurice was a champion to many people. I am 97...

Papa was the most loving and, most of all, a thoroughly *accessible* grandfather. He never made a child feel as though he'd rather be talking to someone else, and I never heard him raise his voice. These are some of my favorite memories:

The only version ever of "Why are you hitting your self?'' that was actually fun.

Once he drove the carpool home when I was in kindergarten, and asked us for directions to one boy's house. We had no idea, so we alternated saying ''Left, right, left...'', and to this day I swear he actually did it, but we still made it to the right house. I've never figured it out.

The cadence of his voice on the phone saying "Hi, honeybunch.''

I don't know that this was true, but it seemed like Nana and Papa always crocheted the same afghan out of the same color of yarn over and over. I remember wondering about that, and being surprised once when Papa was making one out of a brilliant forest green while they were visiting and I was about twelve. It's always been one of my favorite colors, though I don't think I'd ever mentioned it to him, and I was thrilled when he draped it over me when he finished. I still have it, of course.

Papa was, in Jane Austen's words, ''The kindest and best of men.'' Good night, Papa; I love you. Last touch.

Elegy for Maurice

Memory has failed us both.
“Nice car, Jeannie,” you say,
calling me by my mother's name
as we drive to your wife's funeral.
Later you will stare blankly at
your daughter's face.

During the eulogy I hold
your hand as you cry, bewildered,
and at the reception I nod
as you gesture to the black-clad
mourners, telling me, smiling,
“These are all people
from my boxing days.”

We started losing you so long ago,
now you are gone, I have already forgotten
too much. Like you, I have fragments:
a crochet hook in workman's hands,
“C'est si bon,” cribbage with Seven & Seven,
“We thank thee, lord, for these
thy gifts which we have received
from thy bounty through Christ our lord.”

Amen.

Gramps, you were the most gentlemanly, kind and loving man to my mom, Louise Tucker, my brothers and sisters and me! We were honored and blessed that you "adopted" us as your grandchildren. I loved the way you called everyone "honeybunch"' and taught me cribbage and how to make an afghan and placemats. You and Grandma showed us unconditional love! You were always there for us and the big events from First Holy Communion to our weddings!!!!!!! We so miss you! Please give Grams a hug for us and know you were so so loved by your family in California.

Gramps, you were my hero and inspiration. We had many great times over the years. I only wish you could have met your great-grandson, Maxwell.

Tell Gramma and Uncle Charlie that I think of them often. See you on the other side.

I love you,

David
