Max Akins, Pontotoc Max Whitworth Akins, 84, died April 9, 2011 at his home in Pontotoc. He was born March 25, 1927, to Charlie and Bertha Whitworth Akins. Max attended Pontotoc High School graduating in 1945 as valedictorian and class president. After graduating, he entered the Army serving in Japan during the occupation of the country. Later he graduated from the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was married to Hattie Lee Carpenter on September 8, 1949. Max Whitworth Akins, 84, died April 9, 2011 at his home in Pontotoc. He was born March 25, 1927, to Charlie and Bertha Whitworth Akins. Max attended Pontotoc High School graduating in 1945 as valedictorian and class president. After graduating, he entered the Army serving in Japan during the occupation of the country. Later he graduated from the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

He was married to Hattie Lee Carpenter on September 8, 1949. He was Vice-President of Carpenter and Son Ford-Mercury in Pontotoc. Max was very active in his church and community. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church serving as a deacon for many years. Max was also instrumental in establishing the Educational and Family Life Center serving as the chairman of the building finance committee.

He was a also a charter member of the Pontotoc Country Club, past member of the Pontotoc Lions Club, Pontotoc City School Board and Pontotoc City School Endowment for Excellence Committee.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Ken Hester officiating. The burial will follow in the Pontotoc City Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years Hattie Lee Carpenter Akins; one daughter, Debbie (Bob) Ray, of Pontotoc, MS and three sons, Steve (Judy) Akins of Memphis, TN; Kent (Teresa) Akins of Maitland, FL and Chris (Elizabeth) Akins of Petowskey, MI; twelve grandchildren, Evan (Christy)Ray, Jordan (Lili) Ray, Whitney Ray, Lee (Molly) Akins, Patrick (Madeline) Akins, Andrew Akins, Sarah Akins, Macy Akins, Christopher Akins, Lachlan Akins, Declan Akins and Tristan Akins; two great grandchildren, Harper Ray and Libby Akins and special friends were caregivers, Diana Williams and Rhonda Lea.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Annice Wren.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Jimmy Wise Sunday School Class and past/present deacons of the First Baptist Church.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Monday at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall and one hour prior to services Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 31 Washington Street, Pontotoc, MS 38863.
