Johnnie Maxine Surginer Vaughan, 95, a resident of Little Rock, Ark., for more than 60 years, died March 24, 2015, in Frisco, Texas, where she had lived since 2006 to be near family.



Maxine was born March 13, 1920, in Forrest City, Ark., the youngest daughter of Joseph Edward Surginer and Johnnie Manley Lindsey Surginer.



A graduate of Forrest City High School, she established and was the director of the Daycare Program at South Highland Baptist Church when it was located on Elm Street, and the Daycare, Pre-School, and Kindergarten Programs at Markham Street Baptist Church in Little Rock. She retired in 1985 after 22 years at Markham Street Baptist. Hundreds of children, and later their children, were served by her. After retirement, she dedicated the next 21 years as caretaker for her husband.



She married James Charles Vaughan in 1942 in Forrest City, Ark., and they moved to Little Rock in 1946 after his service in the U.S. Army. They were married for 63 years before he preceded her in death in 2005 at age 89.



In addition to her husband and parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her two sisters, Ruth Surginer Beazley of Forrest City, Ark., and Evelyn Louise Surginer D’Arcy Ferguson, of Atlanta, Ga.; and a brother, Joseph Edward Surginer, Jr., of Forrest City, Ark.



Mrs. Vaughan is survived by three daughters: Ruth Ann Ragland (Fred) of Brownsville, Texas; Linda Gail Morgan (Bill) of Frisco, Texas; and Sarah Margaret Bacon of Conway, Ark.; four grandchildren: Angela Gail Romney (Kimball) and Suzanne Marie Porter (Will) of Frisco, Texas; James Matthew Bacon of Little Rock, Ark.; and Stuart Michael Bacon of Conway, Ark.; and five great-grandchildren: Maya Gail, Adrienne Gail and Morgan Grace Romney, and William Sterling Porter of Frisco, Texas; and Autumn Sage Bacon of Conway, Ark.; two sisters-in-law,: Aldena Vaughan of Goodwin and Cabot, Ark., and Sarah Margaret Carter of Wheatley and Conway, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.



She will be remembered for her love of family, her love of the Lord, and her love of children.



Funeral services will be Monday, March 30, 2015, at 10 a.m. at Griffin Leggett Forest Hills Funeral Home at 10200 Hwy 5 N, Alexander, Ark. with burial at Forest Hills Cemetery. The family will receive guests after the service. Memorials may be made to Easter Seals Arkansas.
