Maxine Smith Apperson passed away on April 20, 2014 at the age of 92. She is survived by her sons William Jeffries Apperson, III and his wife Denise Apperson, and Charles Smith Apperson and his wife Carol Apperson, 5 grandchildren (Robert Apperson, Thomas Apperson, Katherine Apperson deBree, Garin Apperson and Conor Apperson) and 4 great grandchildren (Ada deBree, Cora deBree, Brooke deBree and Eleanor Apperson).

Maxine was born in Yuma, Colorado on August 4, 1921 to parents Ada Meredith and Charles Ray Smith. Maxine grew up in Denver, Colorado and was raised by her mother and Grandmother after her father died when Maxine was 2 years old. On a blind date, Maxine met William Jeffries Apperson, Jr., who at the time was Captain in the Army-Air Corps stationed nearby at Lowry Field in Aurora, CO. They married on September 5, 1942. Sons Jeffries and Charles were born while their father was still in the service. After WWII, Jeffries, Jr. completed his undergraduate education in accounting at Denver University, after which the Apperson family moved to McAllen, Texas where son Stephen Frederick was born. This move was followed by relocations to Reynosa, Mexico and Mexico City.

In 1957, the Apperson family returned to the United States and lived in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California. Maxine and her husband moved many more times in Southern California and eventually retired to the town of Weed in northeastern California. Son Stephen was killed in a skiing accident in the mid 1980s. Maxine and Jeff then moved to Whidbey Island off of the coast of Seattle, Washington. After several years they moved to Raleigh, where Maxine's husband of 55 years died in 1999. While living on Whidbey Island, Maxine joined P.E.O., an international philanthropic organization dedicated to promoting educational opportunities for women. She continued to be involved in P.E.O. after moving to Raleigh.

Maxine was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a long-standing member of the Church of the Good Shepard on 125 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh.

A memorial service will be held for Maxine on Monday, April 28 at 11 AM at the Church of the Good Shepard.
