Maxine attended Walla Walla University for medical secretarial schooling but soon found her passion was in the nursing profession itself. At 21 she moved to California to nanny for the Norton family and to attend Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA for nursing. Upon completion of nursing school she moved in with a friend in Loma Linda, CA to continue what would become a 40 year nursing profession.

In Loma Linda she met and married her children's father. Maxine had 2 children. Her oldest is her daughter Vicki and youngest is her son Bob.

In 1972 Maxine and her 2 children moved from San Diego, CA to Boring, Oregon. Four years later Maxine's best friend Jeannie Kimsey introduced her to Maxine's current husband, Dale Stewart. The couple have resided in their current Portland home for the past 20 years.

Maxine retired on September 1, 1996 from her nursing career and for a short time ran a gift boutique from her home.

In May of 1998 after just having lost her oldest sister Vernise to cancer, Maxine herself was diagnosed with breast cancer. This was the start of Maxine's 12 year battle with cancer. Her most current diagnosis was with a very rare form of cancer called angiosarcoma.

Maxine fought bravely against a zero survival rate and it was always amazing to hear her sense of humor even when the days were long and difficult.

Maxine is survived by her husband Dale Stewart of Portland, Oregon; daughter Vicki Montgomery and son, Nicholas, of Gresham, Oregon; son Bob Pike, his wife Barbara and son Sorrin, of Portland, Oregon; and younger sister Jeanette Stinnett and husband Fred of Albany, Oregon.

"Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you." Vernon & Mary Bowman (Portland, OR)
