Maynard Tipton, 82, of CherryValley, IL. died Saturday, September 9, 2017 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family. In a life well celebrated, Maynard was a Native American who embraced his heritage with great respect. He was registered with the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska and fondly referred to as Wha-onk-wa-neek-lo-onk translated to Hawkman. In 1955 he voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Army 2d Airborne Battle Group 187th Infantry and will be honored with Native American Military Honors. He married Rita Grosskopf and together they shared 58 years while raising their family in a home filled with love. Along with his sons and daughter, they looked forward to their annual deer hunting trips, always ending in success. Maynard was an avid reader. He enjoyed bowling, watching NASCAR , and could be found on Saturday nights challenging other racers at Rockford Speedway. Maynard's life was complete when surrounded by his family. Maynard was born on April 24, 1935 in Tomah, WI. to Leslie and Linda (Elk) Tipton.
Survivors: wife, Rita; children, Maria (Pat Olson) Smith, Maynard (Sopheina), Harold, Sherman (Michelle) Tipton; nine grandchildren; 9, great-grandchildren; sister, Charlotte White; many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents.
