Melba was born December 27, 1932 to Herbert and Elvyn Durnell in Moline, IL, and was the younger of two children. Melba married the love of her life, William Edward Spavin of Carbon Cliff, IL, in 1956.
A lifelong woman of faith, she enjoyed studying the Bible and reading. Melba loved her family, her three kids, her grandkids and sharing good times with friends and neighbors. She was a great Midwest sports fan: she loved the Cubs, Bulls and the Bears, as well as the local Quad Cities teams. As a youth, Mel was an avid dancer, and she always enjoyed watching shows full of music and dance. She relocated to Florida in 2004 to be with family, and was very happy when all her children ended up living close to her once again.
She is survived by her three children, Dolores Lowe (Robert Macchione), David (Teresa) Spavin and Daniel Spavin. She has 4 grandchildren, Megan Lowe, Matt (Rose) Meyrer, Kelly Spavin, Jake (Miranda) Spavin, and two adorable great grandsons, Quentin and Kellan Spavin, her brother, Merle, and his children.
Her husband William preceded her in death in 2004. She will join him at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery in a joyful reunion. She was also looking forward to seeing her beloved dog, Cappy who passed in 2016.
Mel's family would like to extend a very special thanks to their mother's caregiver, Janet Stanifer, and her children Karis and TJ. Without Janet's unwavering friendship and expert care, Melba would not have been able to continue living in her own home. Her son Dan also deserves recognition in helping with her care.

We were neighbors of the Spain's years ago in Silvis. We remember how Melba was such a good mom and a real go getter. The Spavins were great fun neighbors. Our prayers are with her family.

She loved to go out with her daughter, Dolores, and hook up with her friend, Betty, and her daughter (me). Be uplifted that she is free of her illness and discomfort. I know you will miss her very much.
