Melvin Wesley Burgess, 86, of Ridgeway, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at Morehead Nursing Center in Eden, NC. He was born in Henry County on March 4, 1926 to the late Clarence Frank Burgess and Elizabeth Roberts Burgess. He served in the United States Air Force during WWII as Flight Engineer on a B-17. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas where he earned his degree in Business Administration. He was a Boy Scout troop leader, served as deacon and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Martinsburg, West Virginia and he retired after forty years as owner and operator of Dunn and Seibert Appliance Store in Martinsburg, West...
Melvin Wesley Burgess, 86, of Ridgeway, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at Morehead Nursing Center in Eden, NC. He was born in Henry County on March 4, 1926 to the late Clarence Frank Burgess and Elizabeth Roberts Burgess. He served in the United States Air Force during WWII as Flight Engineer on a B-17. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas where he earned his degree in Business Administration. He was a Boy Scout troop leader, served as deacon and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Martinsburg, West Virginia and he retired after forty years as owner and operator of Dunn and Seibert Appliance Store in Martinsburg, West Virginia. After retiring, Melvin returned to Henry County and was an active member of Irisburg United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Danforth Burgess, three sisters, Marie Ingram, Carol Burgess and Norma B. Frazier and one brother, Arnold Burgess.
Surviving are one daughter, Julie Ann Burgess Winter of Stuttgart, Germany, two sons, Stephen Franklin Burgess of Montgomery, Alabama and Thomas Alan Burgess of Atlanta, Georgia, four sisters, Barbara Boyce of Florida, Alma Hall of Danville, Patsy Burgess of Richmond, and Rebecca Wilson of Martinsville, two brothers, Andrew "Andy" Burgess and Richard Burgess both of Ridgeway, and two grandchildren, Nicholas Burgess and Christy Burgess.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012 in the chapel of Community Funeral Service of Ridgeway with Rev. Anne Sisson officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Ridgeway with full military honors provided by the Martinsville-Henry Co. Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday March 23, 2012 in the chapel of Community Funeral Service of Ridgeway.
