Born in Bay Minette, Alabama in 1915, she spent her childhood years in Brewton. She attended one year at T. R. Miller High School before leaving school to help her parents in the family business in Brewton. In the early 1930's, she and her family returned to Mobile where she worked in the dry goods business, working for her uncles in downtown Mobile and Prichard. In 1954 she took her wealth of experience and knowledge and opened up her own store in Crichton. Crichton Dry Goods was a fixture for the next 31 years, until her retirement at age 70. Her customers, who called her "Miss Melvina," remember fondly her kindness and the generosity that touched all who knew her there.

Known as "Aunt Mel" to most of the family, and even family friends, she was the matriarch of the family, the port in the storm, the sentry, the quick wit - even in her last days. She shared her good humor, good sense, fantastic memory of family history, and unconditional love with everyone, along with her delicious Lebanese food and a never-ending supply of Coca-Cola. Melvina was an amazing cook, card player and shrewd business woman. She lived a long and wonderful life, was loved by all who met her and will be fondly remembered.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Albert Mansour and Zakia Zoghby Kahalley; six of her seven siblings, of which she was the oldest: Sperdon Kahalley, Lourice Kahalley Pierce, Florence Kahalley, Michael Kahalley, Albert Kahalley, Jr. and Nazha Dolores Belmany.

Left to cherish her memory are: her devoted brother Edward J. Kahalley, Sr.; sisters-in-law Celine Kahalley and Jackie Kahalley; sixteen nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; loving cousins and many friends of the family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from the Little Sisters of the Poor Chapel on Tuesday January 22, 2013 at 10:00am. Burial will follow in the Catholic Cemetery.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the Sisters and Staff of the Little Sisters of the Poor Sacred Heart Residence for their excellent care and attention over the last two years.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Little Sisters, 1655 McGill Avenue, Mobile, AL 36604.
