Merrie was born March 18, 1920 in Cicero, Illinois to parents George and Bessie Berkos. She left our side on December 31, 2012 at the age of 92 years.
She was preceeded in death by her husband William Stepek in 2001. They were married for 63 years.
She is survived by daughters, Sharon Ballantine (Grant) and Madelyn Nunez (Gus); preceded in death by son Corey Stepek (Lorraine): brothers Peter Berkos and Paul Berkos both of San Diego. She also leaves behind eight beloved grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Merrie had been employed by "Claudia's Casuals" for over 24 years. She was Past President of La Mesa Women's Club; served as a Mentor at San Miguel Elementary School, was a member of the "Friends of the Library" and was a member at St. John of the Cross Church, all in Lemon Grove. Her favorite charity was Rady Children's Hospital Auxiliary in San Diego. She lovingly crocheted baby blankets which were used for their premie babies.
Visitation is Monday, January 7, 2013 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 6 p.m. both at Conrad Lemon Grove Mortuary Chapel (619/460-4601). The Funeral Mass is Tuesday, January 8 at 10 a.m. at St. John of the Cross Church with interment at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.
She was loved and cherished by family and friends. She will live in our hearts forever. "Love always."
