Everyone at Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region was
saddened to learn of the death of Merv Burton.
Merv was the best friend of Jennifer Oak who received our 4th home in 2006.
Merv was a dedicated volunteer on our build sites, but his biggest commitment
of time and support was directed to the Habitat ReStore where he
volunteered countless hours over the many years.
Merv will be sadly missed by all his friends at Habitat.
Our sympathy and prayers go out to Jen, her daughter Samantha, and all his family.

My Dad was an amazing man.
He was kind, loving, funny, selfless and very talented. I had never heard him say anything bad about anyone and he went out of his way to help friends and loved ones.
It seems fitting that a lot of my memories involved being in a car going somewhere; whether it was the times I was lucky enough to go to work with him, or more likely driving to and from my mom's and oh, I can't leave out the coffee runs.
Lol !!
I moved to my Dad's when I was 13, it was the first time I had spent more then a month at a time with him in my whole life. I wanted to go to a Catholic school but I had never been baptised and I very much wanted to be. So Dad agreed to do the Catholic classes at Mount St Joseph's with me. Dad and I learned about the religion and stories of the bible, then Dad and I ALWAYS went out for coffee after these classes.

What a memory my Dad has left me with, one that shows true fatherly love.

I am so appreciative of having had that time, just as I am so grateful for all the times after.

I will never forget the look on his face when he would look at his grandchildren. I wish so much that they could have had him for longer.
I love you so much Daddy. I'm so proud of you and your many strengths. I know you are watching us all and trying to make sure we don't do anything too stupid
You don't need to worry about your loved ones, we have each other and you in our hearts.

Love Forever,

Hi again Jennifer. I'm sorry I haven't contacted you earlier, but I really didn't know what to say. I'm so sorry for your loss. I know that no words I say can really help you through this difficult time but I hope you take comfort in knowing that so many people obviously care about you, me being one of them. You were pretty much the only sane person at Stewart Homes and kept me sane through my challenges during that time and for that I am eternally in your debt. If there is anything I can do for you, just name it.

Merv was a lot of fun when I was little. I don't know who loved sugar and junk food more, me or him. He would always play with all the kids and load us full of lots of treats. Those were the days !!! Merv never got mad, was always fun to be around. He was a special person who I will miss. RIP Merv.

I met Merv through a mutual friend whom owned the local Petro Canada stations. He was their mechanic at the time. I had taken my truck in to have to have a repair done. That was the first time I met him. Over the next few months I would talk with Merv after purchasing fuel and a friendship was formed. A friendship that lasted for 22 years until his passing. We both shared the same sense of humour and had similar interests and looked forward to doing things together. We would often just meet for coffee. Merv was the one friend who offered an unconditional friendship. He would do anything for you and never expect anything in return. I remember when Jenn would be doing the books for her mom in the days before computers. She would be trying to balance the books and Merv and I would be there offering our assistance. It became apparent that she didn't want our assistance and sent us away to get coffee. I still remember Merv saying, Ahh no respect. and off we would go laughing returning later with a coffee for Jenn. You are gone now my friend but the many good times we shared will live within me forever.

"Merv was a real gentleman ,never had a bad thing to say about anyone. He was an old car guy, from brakes to engine swaps to body work and paint Merv could do it all.He was more than a son in law he was a true friend. I will miss him every day .

Merv was a special person and a great friend. I will miss his smile and his wonderful laugh. I remember him as a soft spoken man who was very caring, smart, had a good sense of humour and was always willing to help anybody out. Merv was a wonderful dad who spent quality time with his girls when they were growing up. He was so proud of their many accomplishments.
He loved working on cars and I remember one time he was helping me get mine running, a problem with the timing I think. He was under the hood and thought he had it fixed so we turned the key and the flames shot out of the carburetor right to the top of the hood. Poor Merv, his eyebrows and hair were singed. What a sight he was! He did get it running right though. Thanks Merv for all your help with the car and tons of patience.
Merv finally found complete and true happiness spending many wonderful years with Jen. All these happy memories will live on as we keep sharing our stories.
Miss you Merv !!!

A surprising & funny moment in time was when visiting Merv and Jenn when my dog Phoebe (medium sized dog) decided she wanted to be a lap dog like her city cousins Lucky and Brandy (small sized dogs). Of course she decided to choose uncle Merv to have the"best" lap. Unfortunately, she didn't give any warning to anyone.....
well wasn't that a surprise especially for Merv!
Merv, you have left me..who is going to be my right hand man in teasing Jenn?
You will not be forgotten

There are so many memories.....going for car rides with Merv when I was little to take Sara back to her Mom's, Merv coming over to have coffee with my Mom & ended up playing with me & my purple monster hand puppet. When I was 3 years old I asked Merv if he would marry my mom because she didn't have a husband...hehehe.
Then when I got older and Merv was living with us him & I would go to the movies, watch tv & eat popcorn or chips together, we would fix things or put things together.
Then once I moved out I remember the phone calls....I would call Merv and fill him in on my day, I am not sure if he really cared or not but he always listened and asked questions and sounded like he cared what I was doing. He came right up to the hospital after I had both babies to see me & held both when they were not even 24 hours old...he said he never held any baby that young before.
One night I was worried about Andrews breathing in the middle of the night & Merv walked over to sit up with me so I wouldn't be alone.

He didn't have to be... he chose to be my father!
Love you so much Dad

I remember Merve was always the fun adult who would play with us and make us laugh. He was appropriately dubbed the cookie monster because it was no secret how much he loved eating cookies! When I was in brownies Merve would always buy like 5 boxes off me, even if he had already purchased some elsewhere.

Growing up I knew Merve to be a really kind man who never had anything bad to say about anyone.
Once the day came where he finally decided to do something for himself and got together with Jen, I had never seen him so happy. From that day forward he was always beaming! There was no denying how truly happy he was and that was the first time I'd seen what real love looked like.

I had the pleasure of the two of you attending our wedding and it meant so much to me that he came knowing how difficult it probably was mustering up the energy. But boy did he clean up nice!! What a total STUD!! He looked SOOO handsome!!

I'll miss you Merve!

I smile every time I remember ... A long time ago a superintendent of mine came to me to let me know a neighbour of mine was going to call the police because there was this 'strange' guy stalking me. He would sit out on the back hill and watch my apartment for hours late at night....well I bet you can't guess who that was...I wasn't aware he was doing that - but I soon got to the bottom of it and thanked my superintendent for not calling the police......Merv and I laughed about this many times over the years.
Love and miss you more and more each day....my 'Strange stalker' xo

To Jen and Family, I am absolutely shocked to hear the news of Merv`s passing. He was a funny and very caring man. It brings a smile to me when I think of him and his coffee need. I remember fondly trying to stay ahead of him and keep the coffee pot full at the Restore. He will be missed.
