Michael R. Shaffer, PhD, died Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at his home in Merritt Island, FL.
Born Aug. 8, 1926 in Anking, China, and raised in the Philippines, he was a civilian Japanese POW as a teenager for three years. On returning home to Ohio in early 1945, the U.S. Army drafted him, and he
served through WWII plus a few months.
After his service in WWII, Mike attended Purdue University to receive a BS. After graduation he reenlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp for the Korean Conflict. On discharge, he returned to Purdue University for his MS in Chemical Engineering and then was employed by Babcock & Wilcox in Ohio for five years and subsequently pursued his PhD at the University of Florida. During this time, he met his wife, Renee, and they were married for more than 50 years. His surviving sons are Art, Carl aka "Bubba", Rick (Ethel), Michael (Susan), and daughter Michele plus ten grandchildren.
Mike was an engineer at various IBM assignments for 29 years, and on retirement, he became an Adjunct Professor at FIT in the Chemical Engineering Department in Melbourne for ten years.
A Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, PO Box. 199300, Dallas, TX 75219.

Dr. Shaffer was my plant design professor at Fl Tech in 2001-2002. He was a wonderful professor with a great sense of humor. I appreciated him sharing his knowledge and experience with us. My sympathies go to his family and friends.

Mike was a fellow student engineer in our class of 1952 with the Babcock & Wilcox Company. We traveled the same paths for a number of years and I will always remember him for the great guy he was.
