ELK RAPIDS - Michael Carpenter, 58, of Elk Rapids, passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2014. He was born at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota on September 12, 1955 to Marcel "Gov" and Bonnie (Russell) Carpenter.
Michael graduated from Elk Rapids High School in 1973. He then served six years in the Navy with the "Seabees" Construction Battalion NMCB-71, and was stationed in both Bermuda and Italy. Michael was very proud of his accomplishments and service to the Navy. Through the Navy, Michael attended college at the University of Maryland as an art major. He was an exceptional artist and loved drawing and painting. Michael even had a comic strip called "Oyster Stew" that was a regular feature in the Elk Rapids Progress before he joined the Navy; he continued to draw the comic strip while overseas. In 1979, he married the love of his life, Michelle Douglas. Together they raised two children. Before becoming disabled, Michael worked as a machinist and later as a salesman for Elk Lake Tool. He had also been a member of Elk Rapids Fire Department. In his free time, Michael enjoyed fishing, hunting, and carpentry. He was also an accomplished chef and always enjoyed cooking. He took a special interest in automobiles, and received multiple awards for his modified Chevy Blazer. Michael also loved taking care of rescued animals and fishing with his daughter. Michael was a friend to many and was always lending a hand to those who needed it, even while experiencing struggles of his own. Despite numerous obstacles in his life, Michael showed incredible strength and a sense of humor that will be forever missed.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Michelle; children Nicholas (Katie) Carpenter and Taylor Carpenter; siblings Douglas, Patricia, Lydia (Jerry), Barbara (Tim), Russell (Sue); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service followed by a reception will be held for Michael at 2pm on Friday, May 9th at the Elk Rapids Amvet's Post 114. Memorial donations can be made to the Elk Rapids Fire Department or Antrim County Animal Shelter. Please share your fond memories and condolences at www. CovellFuneralHomes.com.
