Michael Duffy of Dallas, Texas passed away on March 7, 2013 at the age of 54. His loving, reputable character and numerous achievements throughout his life are an inspiration to those whom he leaves behind.
Michael was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on February 26, 1959 to Jean Liddy Duffy and the late Martin Joseph Duffy, an executive of the former Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. Mike earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from the State University of New York at Albany, and received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas.
He began his distinguished 25-year career in the credit card and electronic payments industry with Credit Bureau Marketing and Equifax Credit Services. From there he went on to become the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer at a payment processing start-up company in New Hampshire, which later became Paymentech in 1995. Mike rose to the positions of President and Chief Executive Officer of the company in 2000. Under Mike's leadership, Paymentech and Chase Merchant Services were integrated in 2005 to form Chase Paymentech Solutions. In 2008, the company became an entity of JPMorgan Chase and part of Chase Card Services. Mike also served as a board member on several other organizations.
Mike was an innovator and a driving force within the payments industry. While serving as President and CEO of Chase Paymentech, his leadership qualities motivated his management team, of which many members have been together for 20 years, to achieve great heights within their industry. He consistently gave credit to his long-tenured team, thereby fostering a unique culture at Paymentech that supported the career and growth aspirations of individual employees. Mike was commended for his passionate leadership and strategic vision for the company. He enjoyed the respect and admiration of both his colleagues and competitors. He firmly believed in the philosophy of 'family first' and promoted this feeling throughout the company.
Along with his passion for business, Mike had an unwavering dedication and love for his family. He wholeheartedly supported his son and daughter with every one of their various academic, athletic and extracurricular endeavors, especially youth volleyball and youth hockey. He loved traveling with his wife and children, and was extremely proud of them. Much family time was spent listening to Mike's captivating, colorful and engaging stories, as he was widely known for his story-telling and entertaining abilities.
Mike was a sports enthusiast. He began caddying at a young age at Mohansic Golf Course and eventually worked his way up to running the pro shop. There he developed his life-long respect for the integrity of the game and his prized low handicap. He was the quarterback for his high school football team, coached his younger sister to a basketball scholarship, and had an incredible memory for statistics about college and professional athletes and teams from all sports.
He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Ellen Mitchell Duffy, and his children, Thomas and Catherine, his mother Jean Duffy, brothers Robert and Thomas, sisters Kathleen Finck (Robert) and Patricia Kischak (Peter), his aunt Sister Martin Elizabeth, OSB, his nieces, nephews, in-laws and many friends and colleagues.
