Michael Stanley Mason was born October 30th, 1928 in Spokane, Washington, the second child of Croatian immigrants, Steve and Ana Murgic Masan. After his mother’s death, Michael spent most of his youth in a Catholic orphanage in Spokane. He remained a proud Catholic and Democrat throughout his life. While a student at North Central High School, he worked full time at the railroad station in order to save money for college. Once enrolled at Washington State College, Michael earned tuition money by working on a road construction crew and as a hod carrier. He loved his time at Washington State, where he studied chemistry, and most importantly, met Cecilia “Mitzi” Moe from Stanwood, WA. Mike and Mitzi got married in 1949; they were true partners and made every decision together. They became the loving parents of three children: Stephanie, Michael, and Gregory.

After graduating from Washington State with a Masters degree in Chemistry, Michael attended University of Oregon Medical School in Portland (now OHSU), graduating in 1955. After further training and service as an Army surgeon in Vietnam, Dr. Mason began practicing neurosurgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland in 1963. He remained at Good Sam for 50 years, and treated over 20,000 patients. He was known for his willingness to care for anyone, regardless of whether or not they could pay. Patients and colleagues will remember his reassuring bedside manner and ability to explain diagnoses and treatments clearly. He loved his work and said he never thought of neurosurgery as a job. Dr. Mason received the Treasure of Good Samaritan Award in 2011. He had retired from surgery two years ago, but he and Mitzi kept the office open and he kept seeing patients until the last day of his life. He would have been happy that he never had to retire.

Even more than in his work, Dr. Mason found great joy in his family. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mitzi; his children, Stephanie Berge (Brent) of Portland, Michael Mason (Pamela) of Portland, and Gregory Mason (Katy) of Tacoma; and his grandchildren, Eric Berge, Ian Berge, and Anna Mason Wilson (Brian). He is also survived by his and Mitzi’s beloved cat, Baby. He was predeceased by his brother and sisters, John, Catherine, and Helen, and by his daughter-in-law, Pamela Mason. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, and loved to spend time with them working in the yard, golfing, and helping them with their math homework. Dr. Mason completed every task, from surgery to weeding, with the same excellence and thoroughness. He had a lifelong passion for science, especially optics, and held a patent for a surgical microscope. He will be remembered for his tireless work ethic and brilliance, but more importantly for his love of family, his generosity, his dry sense of humor, and his compassion for the poor and vulnerable. He will be greatly missed.

There will be a Gathering in memory of Dr. Mason at 5:30 P.M. on Thursday, July 31st in the Chapel of the Good Samaritan at the west end of the 3rd Floor of Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital. Instead of flowers, the family asks that donations in his remembrance be made to Central City Concern or Project Access NOW, charities which assist people who are in need of medical help. Arrangements by Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary & Sunset Hills Memorial Park.
