PAPPAS, Michael James, 89, beloved husband and father, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 18, while surrounded by family. Michael, born November 10, 1924 in Fostoria, Ohio was the second son of Greek Immigrants James and Anna Pappas. A graduate of Fostoria High School. Mike went on to major in Physics and received his Bachelor of Science in Physics from the Ohio State University. Before attending OSU, Mike faithfully served in the United States Army during the Second World War in the 88th Mechanized Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron with participation in several major battles including the Battle of the Bulge. Upon graduation he took a position as a Physicist at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds before coming to Dayton and joining the Avionics Division at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. All told, upon retirement in January, 1993 he had proudly served the Federal Government for 45 years. With an intense passion for family, Ohio State football and all things Ohio, though having numerous opportunities to relocate, Mike remained, happily, and with great pride, a Buckeye. He was often heard expressing his favorite phrase: "Beautiful Ohio." Mike is preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law Katherine and Ralph Hartley, and grandson, Steven Blanton. Michael is survived by his wife of 47 years, Vera Eileen Pappas, daughters Theresa Wright, Susan and son-in-law William Northcutt, and sons, Robert Kimble, David Kimble, and James and daughter-in-law Dora Pappas, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, as well as his older brother George Pappas, sister-in-law Mary and numerous nieces and nephews. We respectfully wish to thank the wonderful professionals of Kettering Hospital and especially, the amazing people at the Hospice of Dayton, for providing such excellent care and compassion during dad's final few days. Wishing for a private time to mourn our much loved, and dearly missed, husband and father, in lieu of a funeral we will hold a Memorial Service in early spring. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Avenue Dayton, Ohio 45420. TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME-FARHILLS CHAPEL, in care of arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to www.tobiasfuneralhome.com.
