Michael Wendell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 1, 2013.

Born 2-11-21 in Cleveland, Michael J. Wendell spent his youth in Youngstown, Ohio. Mike served in the Army Air Corps flying missions over Europe during World War II. After the War, he completed his studies at the University of Notre Dame. Mike earned his Law Degree at Georgetown. In Washington, D.C. he met his bride, the vivacious Betty Smith.

Their family would grow to include Theresa, Patricia, and Michael.

From 1971-1991 Mike served honorably as a Judge for the 8th District Court in the state of Nevada. Many prominent local attorneys would begin their careers as his law clerk, studying the law and gaining something more important - mutual respect and friendship.

Mike will be remembered for his loyalty to family and friends. His memory for dates and names was amazing. From his youth in Youngstown, his time in the war, Notre Dame or Georgetown, politicians, cops, or crooks he always had a story to share, always with humor and never at another's expense.

Mike should be remembered as a hale and hearty fellow well met.

In 1980, Mike would become a Grandpa. He never tired hearing about the exploits and accomplishments of his eight grandchildren.

A celebration of Mike Wendell and his life will be held at Palm - 7400 W. Cheyenne at 3 p.m. Friday 4 January 2013. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Catholic Charities or the Salvation Army.

I will miss our telephone conversations with you, Mike, we never lacked for things to talk about - mostly about our family. Remembering when my sister-in-law, Rosemary and I stayed with you and beautiful Betty for one of the Loney girls' weddings. (I was criticized for bring 24 pairs of shoes for the weekend!) Such happy memories of a true gentleman, one whose friendship i treasured. I will miss you, Mike.

I am fortunate to have known you when you were on the bench. You were a wonderful judge and person. You brought pride to the legal profession and to Notre Dame University. God bless you and your family.

Besides my own father, the only man I ever knew with such a high degree of integrity, heart, intelligence and wittiness-it was a pleasure being your law clerk in 1986-my first legal position and the best one I will ever have.

I will miss your stories - about both our family and politics - so much. The twinkle in your eyes and your kindness always reminded me so much of my dad. Thanks for the treasured family memories that you and Betty shared with us. Your stories and Betty's corned beef and cabbage made for our most memorable family gatherings. And, thanks for the guidance and help that you gave to me and my sisters when we first landed in Las Vegas 37 years ago. Rest in peace, Mike.
