Michael Lawrence Zarichnak, age 68, of Hoover passed away on Friday, September 27, 2013. He was born February 24, 1945 in Arnold, Pennsylvania. He attended Penn State University and after graduating, served in Vietnam with the 59th "Bushwhacker" Land Clearing Company, with the Army Corp of Engineers from 1968-1971. Mike eventually made his way to the south and worked as a forester for Alabama Power Company from 1975-2011. Michael Lawrence Zarichnak, age 68, of Hoover passed away on Friday, September 27, 2013.
He was born February 24, 1945 in Arnold, Pennsylvania. He attended Penn State University and after graduating, served in Vietnam with the 59th "Bushwhacker" Land Clearing Company, with the Army Corp of Engineers from 1968-1971. Mike eventually made his way to the south and worked as a forester for Alabama Power Company from 1975-2011. After retiring, he enjoyed part-time work with the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Mike was an active member of St. George Melkite Greek Catholic Church. He served as chairperson on the Parish Council for several years and loved teaching Sunday school. He also helped prepare food and serve at the annual Middle Eastern Food Festival.
Mike was a member of several professional societies and served his community. He was a member of the Society of American Foresters and was a Certified Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture. He was a member of the Hoover Beautification Board and Quartermaster at the VFW post 668.
Mike is survived by his wife of 37 years, Carole, his children Michael (Jenny,) and Andrea, two grandsons, Michael and Luke, mother Olga Zarichnak and brother Richard Zarichnak, both of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his father Michael Zarichnak.
The family will receive friends for viewing Tuesday October, 1 at St. George Melkite Greek Catholic Church at 5pm, with Trisagion Prayers at 7pm. A funeral service will be performed Wednesday, October 2 at 10am, also at St. George, followed by a burial at Elmwood Cemetery. John Ridouts will be directing.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations be made to St. George Church, our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, or St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Arnold, Pennsylvania.
