Mildred Acker Luck, age 80, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Friday, January 25, 2013. Born in Birmingham, Alabama on May 11, 1932 to parents Steadham and Grace Fruitticher Acker, Mrs. Luck graduated from Ramsey High School in 1949. She attended Holton Arms Junior College in Washington, DC and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where she became a member of Alpha Delta Pi social sorority. She was a member of Highlands United Methodist Church.
She was married to King Graham Luck at the home of her parents on February 14, 1953. As a young woman, she worked in the insurance industry, retiring in 1973. From 1985-1995, she and King were residents of Tampa, FL. After becoming wheelchair bound in 2009, Greenbriar at the Altamont became her home. Refusing to let her mobility inhibit her social life, she continued playing dominoes or cards and attending activities with the other residents. She was a very happy person, always smiling and laughing, up until the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and granddaughter, Mary Beth Hooper of Birmingham, Alabama. She is survived by her sister, Ann Acker Kessler; her children, King Graham "Skip" Luck II, Shelley Elizabeth Luck, Mary Mildred Luck, and Leslie Luck Hooper (Bob) of Birmingham, Alabama and Lisa Luck Phillips (Chuck) of Pell City, Alabama; her grandchildren, Ashley and Logan Phillips of Pell City, Alabama, Christopher Luck (Kandace) and Justin Luck of Birmingham, Alabama, Jennifer Luck of Maryville, Tennessee and great-granddaughter Kaylee Rose Luck of Birmingham, Alabama. Many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews also survive her.
The family thanks the caregivers at Greenbriar at the Altamont for their loving care and kindness during her time there.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 27 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Ridout's Funeral Home, Valley Chapel. Graveside services will be at Elmwood Cemetery on Monday, January 28 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Highlands United Methodist Church, 1045 20th St S Birmingham, AL 35205, or a charity of your choice.
