Mildred Lucille Cheves Moorman, wife of the late Dr. John Hope Moorman, Jr. of Martinsville, VA died peacefully September 14, 2013. She was born November 3, 1919 in Macon, Georgia, to the late John Langdon and Minnie Ida Roberts Cheves, the seventh of their eight children. She is survived by her five children, Kenneth Allen Moorman (Susan) of Williamsburg, VA; Linda Jean Moorman Price (Jay) of Columbia, SC; Ronald Eugene Moorman (Betty) of Martinsville, VA; Dianne Lilia Moorman Johnson of Westminster, MD; and Mary Katherine Moorman (Steve Morris) of Mint Hill, NC. Mildred Lucille Cheves Moorman, wife of the late Dr. John Hope Moorman, Jr. of
Martinsville, VA died peacefully September 14, 2013. She was born November 3, 1919
in Macon, Georgia, to the late John Langdon and Minnie Ida Roberts Cheves, the seventh
of their eight children.
She is survived by her five children, Kenneth Allen Moorman (Susan) of Williamsburg,
VA; Linda Jean Moorman Price (Jay) of Columbia, SC; Ronald Eugene Moorman (Betty)
of Martinsville, VA; Dianne Lilia Moorman Johnson of Westminster, MD; and Mary
Katherine Moorman (Steve Morris) of Mint Hill, NC. Her beloved grandchildren are
Stuart Elizabeth Moorman Acrey (Clinton) of Winston-Salem, NC and daughter Ellie;
Hope McNeil Moorman Yarbrough (Brad) of Apex, NC and daughter Callie; Sarah
Livingston Ehrhardt Finney (Jason) of Katy, TX and children Wilson, Livingston and
Jameson; Katherine Hope Ehrhardt Traub (Danny) of Lexington, SC and sons Jack and
Luke; Christina Olivia Moorman Anstaett (Josh) of Spanaway, WA; Caitlin Meredith
Moorman of Raleigh, NC; Christopher Andrew Johnson (JoDanna) of Hilliard, OH and
son Brayden; and Elisabeth Ashley Johnson Moses (Byron) of Titusville, FL and daughter
Eleana. She is also survived by a special niece Betty Jo Croom Bowen (BF) of
Foneswood, VA and numerous extended family members. She was predeceased by
brothers Harry Langdon Cheves, John William Cheves, and Joseph Parry Cheves; sisters
Rose Cheves Croom, Ruth Cheves, and Anne Hazel Cheves Grunwald. She is survived
by one sister, Emily Watkins Cheves Garrett of Fort Walton Beach, FL.
Mildred graduated from and met her husband while attending the Macon Hospital
Nursing School. They married June 21, 1941 at First Baptist Church in Macon, GA. She
and Dr. Moorman spent their first year of marriage at various army bases as he prepared
to deploy with the Army Medical Corp in the European Theater during WWII. She
resided in Macon until Dr. Moorman's return from overseas duty in 1945. As Dr.
Moorman pursued further medical training they lived in Richmond, VA, Macon and
Americus, GA, and Akron, OH. They moved to Martinsville in 1954 to establish his
OB/GYN practice. She was a homemaker who lovingly cared for her family and was a
long-time member of First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville where she was a Sunday
school teacher and active member of the women of the church. She was active in garden
clubs, an avid bridge player, and served as president of the Martinsville Hospital
Auxiliary. For the last twelve years she resided at King's Grant in Martinsville.
The family will receive friends at Mckee-Stone Funeral Home, 109 Broad Street,
Martinsville, Tuesday, September 17, from 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held at
Victory Chapel at King's Grant, 250 Kings Way, Martinsville, VA, on Wednesday,
September 18, at 10:00 AM, with a graveside service following at 3:30 PM at the Mt.
Jackson Cemetery in Mt. Jackson, VA. She will be buried beside her husband in the
Moorman Family plot. McKee-Stone Funeral Home of Martinsville has charge of the
arrangements.
