Millard F. Thatcher, 91, of Lakewood, died on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 in the Harrogate Health Center. He was an administrator in the lighting fixture manufacturing business first with Lightolier in Jersey City and later with Illuminating Experiences in Highland Park, where he retired in 1989 as Vice President. In his early business career, he was in insurance with Crum & Forster and then with The Great American Insurance Company, both in Hartford and New York City. Millard F. Thatcher, 91, of Lakewood, died on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 in the Harrogate Health Center. He was an administrator in the lighting fixture manufacturing business first with Lightolier in Jersey City and later with Illuminating Experiences in Highland Park, where he retired in 1989 as Vice President. In his early business career, he was in insurance with Crum & Forster and then with The Great American Insurance Company, both in Hartford and New York City. Mr. Thatcher was a longtime member of the Pleasant Plains Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as Treasurer among other positions. He was also a member and past president of the Bell & Siren Club of Newark, the International Fire Buff Associates and the Fire Buff Association of NJ. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of VFW Post 8885, where he was quartermaster. He was a member of the Auditorium Ushers Association, Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, and a longtime summer resident in the Ocean Grove tent colony. He was a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Toms River. Mr. Thatcher was born and raised in Jersey City and lived most of his adult life in Glen Ridge, before moving to Greenbriar Woodlands in 1991 and then to Harrogate in 2004. He is survived by his son Bruce M. Thatcher of Acton, MA and his daughter Joan T. Dilakian of New York, NY, and by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Helen L. Thatcher.
Visitation will be Friday, April 25, 2014, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm and Saturday, April 26, 2014, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the D'Elia Funeral Home,1300 Vermont Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701. His funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014 in the funeral home. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Park Cemetery in Hackensack, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association of Ocean Grove, NJ, or to the Pleasant Plains Volunteer Fire Department, Toms River, NJ.
