Minna Frank Friedlander Baer passed away on May 5, 2011. Minna was born in Houston, Texas on November 11, 1928 to Reba and Leon Friedlander. She graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1945 and attended the University of Texas at Austin. She and Leopold ("Leop") Baer married on December 17, 1950 and shared 60 wonderful years together. Upon leaving University of Texas, she worked for Cities Service Oil Company as a secretary. After she and Leop married, they had two children, Adrian ("Ardie") and Melanie. Minna was a wonderful mother and incredible cook. She baked brownies for Passover the recipe for which cannot be replicated. She made chocolate ice box cakes for Ardies' birthdays. When Melanie was diagnosed with terminal kidney failure in 1961, Minna volunteered to donate one of her kidneys for the first known mother to daughter kidney transplant in medical history. The transplant was performed at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts on November 22, 1963. Before and after the transplant, Minnna was Melanie's loving caregiver in Boston and Houston. Melanie survived until July 29, 1967. After Melanie's death, Minna went to work in the fine jewelry department at Sakowitz-Post Oak where she was a consummate sales person. She also built a small business in which she collected bromeliads in the wild in Mexico and sold them in Houston. She and Leop traveled the world including Mexico, the Caribbean, most of the countries in Europe, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Russia, and China. After retiring from Sakowitz, she volunteered for seventeen years at St. Luke's Hospital by bringing drinks to patients and their families and staffing the information desk. She also volunteered in many capacities for the Houston chapter of the Houston Hospice. She is preceded in death by her parents Reba and Leon Friedlander; her brother, Jack Friedlander; her mother in law, Doris Baer; her brother in law Richard Baer; and her daughter, Melanie Baer. Minna is survived by Leop, Ardie, Ardie's wife Lisa, and beloved grandchildren, Melissa, Jenna and Gigi; sisters in law, Judy Friedlander of Columbus, Georgia and Judy Baer of Houston, Texas; Diane Newman cousin, and Renee Faberge cousin. In addition, the family wishes to thank all the friends and loved ones who have been so dear throughout Minna's life. In appreciation, the family wants to thank and acknowledge the loving care provided to Minna by Kaye Woods, Doretha Boyd, and Irma Spiker. The funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 in the morning on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at the Congregation Beth Israel Cemetery Mausoleum at 1207 West Dallas Street, Houston, Texas where Rabbi David Lyon will officiate.
