Mohamed Afify Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 10, 2014.

Dr. Mohamed Ahmad Afify, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2014 at 8:53 AM. Dr. Afify was born in Cairo, Egypt, to Ahmed and Nabawiya Afify.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Abla Afify, also born in Egypt; his daughter, Sarah; family in Egypt; and many, many dear friends.

Dr. Afify received an academic scholarship to medical school at Kasr El-Aini, in Cairo, Egypt, graduating first in his class. He served in the Ministry of Public Health in Cairo. After choosing his specialty of Otolaryngology (Ears, Nose, and Throat), he served residencies in Cairo University Hospitals, England, and Buffalo, New York, before starting in solo private practice in Norfolk, Virginia. He became a diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology, and was a member of the American Academy of Facial, Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Medical Society, the International College of Surgeons, the Medical Society of Virginia, the Virginia Society for Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the Tidewater Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology Society, and the Norfolk Academy of Medicine.

He was affiliated with many area hospitals, including Sentara Norfolk General, Sentara Leigh Memorial, and Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters; he was among the first to perform surgery and provide emergency room coverage at Chesapeake General at its inception; and he was perhaps most well-known and well-loved at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center.

In his forty years of private practice, Dr. Afify enjoyed caring for patients of all ages, who will remember his cheerful greeting, "What's the good news with you today?" He had a special love for his youngest patients, who would run to give him a hug and climb up in his lap. It was not unusual for him to treat three and four generations in the same family. In addition to his skillful, gentle touch, a special gift he gave each patient was his time and focused attention. He never rushed.
He developed excellent working relationships and close friendships with many of his colleagues; however, in addition to the many area physicians who referred patients to him, his patients were the reason his practice thrived for so many years, as they expressed to their families and friends their appreciation of his compassion, gentleness, and kindness as well as his skill, knowledge, and expertise.

Everywhere Mohamed Afify went, he made lifelong friends. A devout Muslim, he had respect for and deep friendship with people of all faiths. A fascinating teller of true stories, he was an even better listener, with a genuine interest in people. He was gifted with an amazing memory for faces, names, and facts, and was always interested to learn more from each person he talked to. Nothing gave him greater pleasure than helping others, whether by free medical care, a gift, advice, or compassionate listening. He is greatly missed.

Funeral prayers will be held 12:45 p.m., Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at the Mosque and Islamic Center of Hampton with interment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.

Many months late I heard the news of Dr. Afify's passing. He treated me as an older teenager in the early 80"s and my daughter in the late 90's. My husband and I remember fondly his greeting of "hello beautiful" every time she visited his office. Our sincere condolences. The LeHew Family

My Father was a close and long-time friend of Dr. Afify. When I lost my Father, Dr. Afify became closer to me. Always had wisdom and a story (usually backed by experiences with his Father) for me. Both as my doctor and friend I could never ask for any better relationship. A void that I will never be able to fill but grateful for the memories.

I was employed by Dr. Afify for 16 years and will miss him greatly. He made it enjoyable to come to work and I heard him say "So what's the good news with you?" to every patient who came through the door. My thoughts and prayers go to Abla and Sarah. What a great legacy you have had.

Dr. Afify treated my daughter, Mandy, when she had to have her tonsils removed. Although this was almost 20 years ago, I never forgot what a kind and caring physician he was to our daughter. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Dr. Afify was the kindest, most considerate and generous man I have ever known. My deepest sympathies over his passing. I am distressed and greatly saddened by his loss.

He was a shining, bright light in a world of negativity. His positive and enthusiastic spirit was a joy.

Very few of us will ever know someone as special, caring, sincere, and conscientious as Dr. Afify.

The world has lost a great man, and we have lost a great friend.

Dr. Afify had been a friend of our family since the eighties. The last time I saw him was when I visited Virginia Beach a couple of years ago. He treated me when I had an ear infection and did not take a dime. This is typical of his generous nature and compassion. He wasn't only a great physician but a kind man with a big warm smile. May Allah bless his soul in heaven.

It was my pleasure to meet Dr. Afify as I was one of Sarah's English teachers at Cape Henry Collegiate School. He was such a distinguished person: handsome and scholarly and congenial.
Sarah was a delightful student, and I send to her and to her mother my sincerest sympathy in the loss of such an admirable father, husband, doctor, and citizen. The world will miss his presence.

I first met Mo over 40 yrs ago when we were both residents in Buffalo. He then "followed" me to Norfolk. Through all those years we have worked together and enjoyed each other. His obituary is such an accurate portrait of him. He was a kind man, a gentleman in all ways. The treatment that he gave me, my family, my friends and probably most importantly my patients will not be forgotten by any of those entities. You will be missed Mo.

No one could have had a kinder boss or a better friend. Dr. Afify was so good to my husband, my parents, and all of my family, and they all love and respect him so much. In 32 years I never had a cross word from him, he never failed to say thank you, he was so patient. I learned so much from him, and I miss him more than words can say. May God comfort and bless Abla and Sarah and all of Dr. Afify's family and friends.
