Gunnery Sergeant Moncie Lamar Johns, age 44, of Brunswick, was killed in Basra, Iraq on June 17, 2014 while supporting US missions and serving as a contractor with the Department of Defense. He was retired from the Marine Corps but still desired to serve, protect, and defend the Iraqi people. Gunny Johns was one of the finest Marines ever to wear the uniform. He embodied the values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. He was dependable, intelligent, fearless, and always the first one to volunteer for the tough assignments. Gunnery Sergeant Moncie Lamar Johns, age 44, of Brunswick, was killed in Basra, Iraq on June 17, 2014 while supporting US missions and serving as a contractor with the Department of Defense. He was retired from the Marine Corps but still desired to serve, protect, and defend the Iraqi people.

Gunny Johns was one of the finest Marines ever to wear the uniform. He embodied the values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. He was dependable, intelligent, fearless, and always the first one to volunteer for the tough assignments.

Gunnery Sergeant Johns led Marines in a variety of units during his time in the Marines including 1st Battalion 4th Marines, 2nd Battalion 5th Marines, and as a Drill Instructor.

He is survived by his dad, William Johns; his mother, Brenda Johns; brothers William Johns, Jr and Michael Johns; sister Felisha Johns and 2 daughters, Hayley Johns and Maddison Johns.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held Monday, July 7, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, GA. The procession will leave the funeral home at 11:00 am. Escorts provided courtesy of the Leathernecks Motorcycle Club International, the Patriot Guard Riders, Georgia State Patrol and the Glynn County Police Department.
