Morris Acker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 1, 2011.

Morris R. Acker, age 74, of Northport, died Oct. 30, 2011, at home. Services will be 11 a.m. today at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. George Shaddix officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bea; his father, Stewart Acker, and mother, Hattie Acker Friday; and brother, Hubert Acker.

Survivors include his sons, Steve Acker (Kelly) and Stan Acker (Kristi); sister, Bessie Mills; brothers, Charles Acker, Doug Acker, Keith Acker, and David Acker; grandchildren, Stephanie Ellison (Justin), April Tidmore (Travis), Olivia Acker, and Abby Francis Acker; and great-grandchildren, Karsyn and Morrisa Tidmore and Payton Grace Ellison.

Morris was born to Stewart and Hattie Acker June 29, 1937. He was surrounded by loving brothers and one cherished sister. He later married the former Beatrice Rice and was blessed with two sons, Steve and Stan. Morris and Bea were married for 55 years. He founded Acker Appliance in 1968.

He was a businessman, but more importantly, he was an active father. He coached Little League baseball, taught Sunday School, and carried the chains for TCHS football for over 30 years. He served as a Deacon for Northwood Hills Baptist Church and served on numerous civic boards. Morris served on the Northport Zoning Board of Adjustments, the Board of Directors for the Northport Chamber of Commerce, SouthTrust Bank Board of Directors, and 12 years on the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education.

His life was fulfilled when he was blessed with four beautiful granddaughters and three great-granddaughters. He was called "friend" by many, and he will be missed by all. Our assurance is in knowing that he is forever with our Lord and Savior. We look forward to seeing him again one day.

The family would like to extend thanks to our many friends and family who have provided so much comfort during this difficult time.

Pallbearers will be Don Williams, Glen Strickland, Jim Mills, Johnny Mills, Randy Lambert, and Jamie Redd.

Honorary pallbearers are Art and Eulene Nuckols, Kay Hubbert, Yusaf Hassan, past and present employees of Acker Appliance, and friends of Northwood Hills Baptist Church and Carrolls Creek Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Northwood Hills Baptist Church Building Fund.

Steve and Stan,
It was quite a shock when my wife told me today that Morris passed away. I was out of town and did not hear the news. He was a great man and friend, as all of your family is to me. It was the summer of 1969, I was 17 years old when I started working at Acker Appliance with your Dad,your Granddaddy and uncle Keith. We had a lot of fun, several of my teenage memories are intertwined with your Dad and your family. Outside my Dad, I think I learned more on how to respect and listen to people from him than any other man in my life. Northport has lost a honest, fair minded business man that always put the customer first. We as a community will miss his leadership and friendship.

About twenty years ago or more, I was at Aunt Bea's and Uncle's house for a quick visit. The phone rang. He answered it, listened for a minute and handed the receiver to me with a slight grin on his face. After I said hello, the caller identified himself as a salesman whose company was offering a special on vinyl siding. Not being prepared for such a call as a visitor in SOMEONE ELSES HOME, I declined the offer and hung up the receiver. I still regret not ordering the most expensive package available to be installed immediately!!!

Steve, I will truly miss your Dad. I always looked forward to my conversations with him. I knew him in a business sense but felt I knew him personally. He was that kind of person.
No doubt you and your family will find comfort in his memory. May God bless you all.

Mr. Acker gave me my first summer job delivering appliances and was the first to extend me credit -- a transister radio on layaway. He was a great man and I was blessed to know him.

Please accept my sincerest sympathy on the passing of Mr. Acker.

He truly was a great business leader because he always wanted to do right for the customer. He was in business to make money, sure, but he didn't gouge folks or apply pressure. He took his time and gave great customer service which is rare these days. He worked with his customers and his business tactics encouraged repeat business. If you go into one of the big box stores, you can make a purchase, but that's all. With Mr. Acker, he made sure his customers were satisfied and that we left his store feeling good about a purchase. His word was his bond and he stood by it no matter what.

He was a good man.
