Morton Adels Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 23, 2010.

DR. MORTON JULIAN ADELS passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, the 21st of March 2010, at The Methodist Hospital in Houston. He was 77 years old.Morton was originally diagnosed with myelofibrosis, a bone marrow disease, leading to leukemia in 2009. He fought a positive, determined and courageous battle throughout his illness.

Morton was born on the 7th of April 1932 in Houston, Texas to Sadie and Leslie Adels. His family moved to Tyler, Texas where he and his sister, Marlene Roosth, grew up amidst the slow pace of small town life with their grandparents, Millie and Harry Swartzberg. He attended University of Oklahoma majoring in pre-med. While attending OU, he played basketball and was a member of the Phi Lam fraternity. Morton excelled at OU and graduated in 1952 to begin his medical journey at Baylor College of Medicine where he graduated in 1956 with academic honors. From 1956 to 1957, Morton served an internship at University of Pennsylvania Hospital before returning to Houston for a residency in obstetrics and gynecology in the Baylor College of Medicine program.

His training was interrupted by two years as he served as Captain in the United States Air Force, stationed at Shaw Air Force base in Sumter, South Carolina. In 1962, Morton entered private practice in Houston and was a founding member of the OB/GYN Associates. Morton was affectionately known as the Jolly Green Giant due to the green medical scrub suit he would wear while in the operating room. His presence was truly larger than life. Bringing over 4,000 babies into this world was the highlight of his medical career. One of the memorable moments of his career was serving as attending obstetrician for a wife of an Apollo 13 astronaut, with whom he traveled with President Nixon aboard Air Force One to greet the crew in Hawaii as they returned from that historic mission. Morton's love, care and genuine concern for his family and friends extended to his professional life and to all of his patients as well. Morton touched many lives with his kind bedside manner, his clarity in medical matters, and his charismatic personality. He was an admired colleague and was adored by all of his patients.

Morton J. Adels served on the staff of The Methodist Hospital and The Women's Hospital of Texas, and was a member of numerous professional societies, including the Harris County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Fertility Society and the Houston Gynecological and Obstetric Society, serving a term as President of that organization.Morton earned the respect and admiration of all who truly knew him, for his keen intelligence, uncompromising integrity, and dedication to always be the best he could be at whatever he did. To that end, his interests outside of medicine were numerous and varied. He mastered a pilot's license for a single-engine aircraft, enjoyed the outdoors, with fishing, big game and bird hunting, tennis and golf, and was an avid coin, knife, gun and thimble collector. Morton was extremely pleased with his hole-in-one at Willowisp Country Club. His knowledge of sports trivia was encyclopedic and he entertained his huge circle of family and friends as a consummate story and joke teller. He will always remain a strong and guiding inspiration to his children, family and friends.

Morton is survived by his loving companion, Cindy Blanks. He was the most devoted father to his five daughters, all who survive him, Dawn Adels Fine of Miami, Florida, Nanci Adels Fine, Jill Adels Klaff, Allison Adels and their mother, Phyllis Mirkin Adels, as well as his daughter, Kelly Adels Hess, her husband, Clive Hess and her mother, Linda Haws Adels. He was a loving grandfather to Tony Holmes and Francesca Fine, Katie Estelle Klaff, Zoey and Juliette Hess. Morton is also survived by his sister, Marlene Roosth, niece, Valerie Wallace and her husband, Michael Wallace and nephew, Michael Roosth and his wife, Tina Roosth, and Cindy Blanks' children, Russell Blanks and Kara Irvine, and her husband, Keith Irvine, and their children, Emory and Korbin Irvine.

The family desires to express their special thanks to Dr. John McCarthy and the Main Building's 8th floor staff of The Methodist Hospital, and also to Dr. Charles Koller of M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Additionally, the family wishes to acknowledge Mary McKelvey for her devoted care and love.

A funeral service, in celebration of Dr. Morton Julian Adels' life, is to be conducted at half-past two o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 24th of March, at Congregation Beth Israel, 5600 North Braeswood Boulevard in Houston, where David A. Lyon, Senior Rabbi, and Robert M. Gerber, Cantor, are to officiate.Immediately following the service, the family is to gather for a private interment ceremony at Emanu El Memorial Park in Houston. All are invited to then join the family at half-past six o'clock Wednesday evening for a minyan and reception at the East Four Leaf Tower, 5100 San Felipe Road in Houston.

In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in memory of Dr. Morton J. Adels may be directed to the American Diabetes Association , 2400 Augusta Dr., Suite 175, Houston, TX, 77057; or to the charity of one's choice.

We were all so blessed to
have known Morton Adels.
As a patient you had a new
friend and the most competant physician one would
ever hope to have. After
31 years in his care including two
beautiful children de-
livered, one of whom be-
came a doctor, I would
run into him golfing at
Memorial Park, and be reminded of his kind and gentle nature. I had missed the sad news of his
passing, but learned of it
today through mutual friend, Charles Streusand.

I am so truly sorry for your
loss, yet thankful he and
his family shared his warm
and sharp presence with
so many of us very blessed
and fortunate Houston and
Texas women.

I moved to Houston at the age of 21 to work at the Medical center as a surgical tech. My Dad told me to call a fellow Doctor, who he had gone through OB residency with in Philadelphia, who my Dad said was a great guy who would help me if I ever needed it. That man was Dr. Adels, who I thought was so funny, gentle and kind. He hired me to work in his office along with Ann and Che' and what a wonderful time it was. Dr. A. was the tallest most loveable Texan I have ever met and I will never forget him! With love to all the Adels girls.

Dr. Adels was my doctor from 1973 until his retirement and delivered my youngest child. He was my mother's and daughter's doctor as well. I'll never forget going into surgery and a nurse at Methodist Hospital asking me who my doctor was, I replied, Morton Adels, her comment, "you have the best." I am so grateful that I met you Cindy at Methodist Hospital last October with Dr. Adels as I was leaving with my husband. What a joy to see him and the twinkle still in those eyes and smile even though he was ill. There will never be another doctor like Dr. Adels.

Dr. Adels was a joy, even with the dreaded pelvic exams that one had to submit to with a visit to him. He cared for several in our family. Because we rebounded quickly from surgery, he always said we were of good peasant stock. We didn't know whether to feel complimented or insulted! He was certainly a one-of-a-kind doctor who was well loved by us and his other patients.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. God bless.

"I will always remember the way Dr. Adels welcomed me into his home with a smile, a joke and usually some sort of sporting event on the television. He had a way of making me feel comfortable and I will never forget the way he treated me with respect and kindness. May the Adel's family find the strength to carry on and realize that Dr. Adels touched, and changed many lives, during his lifetime.

I had the pleasure of working for Dr. Adels at the Airport Macgregor clinic from 1998 til his retirement. I was one of Dr. Adels many patients for over 20 years. He delivered my son
on April 23rd, and my daughter on April 3rd--both in the early 70's. He wanted to deliver both of them on April 7th, because that was his birthday! He was the most wonderful doctor I have ever had--he was so caring and he had such a great bedside manner.
I am so sad to hear of his passing. I know that we all have a wonderful gaurdian angel up in heaven to watch over us.
My thoughts are with all of his family.

Dr. Adels delivered me in Houston in 1976. I've gone on to have an incredible life, having grown up in Tyler, and now I live in Denver where I am a college professor. I have always heard about Dr. Adels and how my birth was such a joyous--and humorous--event, largely as a result of this incredible man. I never had a chance to meet Dr. Adels, but he might have been pleased to know that, 34 years after he remarked, "Whatever it is, it's got red hair!" it still has red hair. Dr. Adels delivered my two wonderful sons in the early 70's. I told him if I had a girl, I was going to name her Leslie Adel after him not knowing his father's name. I had a son nevertheless. I was blessed to be his patient.

We were so sad to hear of Morton's passing. Our family have always been close to the Adel's family although time and distance have kept us apart for years. Carole and I spent 8 years in Tyler, Texas and were dear friends of Mortons parents. Our thoughts are with the family at this time.

Dear Adels Family,
Dr. Adels was my doctor for decades. He was an extraordinary doctor, and I will miss him very much. I have a medical practice of my own now, and teach too, and I find myself doing things that he did, things that meant so much to me as the patient. He was a wonderful role model, and the good things that he has done will live on and on through the people he helped and the students he taught.

I too was a patient of Dr. Adels in the late sixties. He was due to deliver our son in December of 1968 but had to leave to attend a space launch later that day in FL going to the moon I believe. I will never forget how kind and concerned he was with me assuring me that another associate was perfectly capable of delivering the baby because his flight was leaving and I was still in labor - after being induced at that! I never got to tell him that same baby became a secret service agent on the presidential detail and was attached to Laura Bush and then Jenna and then the president for a short while. I think he would have been proud! He was a wonderful doctor and friend and loved his girls dearly. We are so sorry for your loss. Sue Feldman

My heart is filled with sadness at the loss of Dr. Adels. He was my doctor from the 60s until he retired from OB/GYN Associates, and I've asked about him every time I've been there since he left. Such a caring, fun-loving man. He took good care of me through the years and especially while I was pregnant with my daughter (now 33). He was out of town for the delivery and apologized profusely because, as he said, "I wanted to unwrap that package myself." He did, however, personally deliver the baby boy who grew up to marry my daughter, so he is very special to our family. To his family and dear friends, my prayers are with you.

I am one of Dr. Adels 4,000+ patients. He delivered both of my sons, (1968 and 1973). He made the whole experience one that I will never forget. He also delivered both of my nieces and was also my Mother's doctor until he retired. We all loved him and are so sorry to hear of his passing. It surely must be comforting to the family to know that he was so well thought of and loved. God bless you all...

DR. ADELS BECAME MY DOCTOR WHEN I WAS IN MY EARLY TWENTIES UNTIL HE RETIRED. I TRUSTED HIM COMPLETELY AND HE WAS THE ONLY DOCTOR I HAD FAITH IN TO PERFORM SURGERY. WHEN I GOT PREGNANT AT THIRTY-FIVE HE HAD STOPPED DELIVERING BABIES AND I WAS THE MOST DISAPPOINTED PATIENT, HE WAS PROFESSIONAL, INSTILLED CONFIDENCE AND ONE OF THE FINEST DOCTORS OF HIS TIME. I KNOW HE FOUGHT A COURAGEOUS BATTLE BECAUSE THAT WAS HIS NATURE - HE LOVED HIS GIRLS - MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO HIS FAMILY - HE WAS A WONDERFUL DOCTOR - YOU WERE BLESSED TO HAVE HIM. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Adels the day I was born, literally! He was my mothers doctor for more than 25 years and delivered me and my two sisters. Then almost 17 years later I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Adels myself. He was not only one of the nicest people I've known but he was a wonderful doctor. He was always kind, patient and willing to take the time to talk to you. Five years ago my father died and Dr. Adels was kind enough to come to my fathers funeral - I hope he knew how much this meant to my family. You will be missed Dr. Adels.
